Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald. There are several very funny side characters ( Felix Bressart and Curt Bois) in this film (including, again, Herman Bing) and quite a bit of quietly funny dialogue. Eddy plays a man sweet-natured almost to a fault (which are generally not my favorite of his roles) and fewer of these songs favor his voice (wanting him too sing too high) than in most of his other films, but he still sings well. She sings several songs well, but others don't do much for me. This isn't my favorite musical score. The largest criticism (at the time) was that the film was a disappointment compared to the subtle play it was based on. I didn't see the play, but thought the film was still good and moving (it's sad--I almost, but didn't, cry). The film quality is an improvement over Sweethearts and they had a better idea how to make the stars up for color. I could lose the Operetta scene (you'll know the one I mean - the song's OK, but someone twisted did the costumes). Unfortunately, Bitter Sweet, like Maytime, does something I can't approve of--kill off my favorite character.*** MUST SEE
