Scaled Quail
Callipepla squamata

Scaled Quail are more difficult to differentiate among the sexes. They do not have a topknot like the Gambel's quail but have a bushy white "crest" that can be raised or retracted. In males the crest is somewhat lighter in color.   The feathers on the chest and part of the back have black tips which gives them the scaled look.

scaled3.JPG - 12777 Bytes Scaled quail are much gentler birds than the Gambel's although they are known to cross with them in the wild. These birds are not as prolific as the Coturnix and Bobwhite quail and the eggs do not hatch as well either. Along with the Gambel's quail, I have found these to be the most difficult birds to raise successfully to adulthood.  If I had to name a favorite then this quail would be it.

Scaled quail are found in the deserts of Texas, New Mexico, and parts of Colorado and Arizona.  More information of Scaled Quail and their biology can be found here.  There is additional information on  Scaled Quail Habitat Management  at the College of Agriculture at New Mexico State University.
