Bobwhite Quail
Colinus virginianus

Bobwhite are gentle and easy to raise. The males have white throats and eyebrow stripes. In females it is light brown.

bobwhite3.JPG - 13455 Bytes During the summer months the males give the familiar "bob-white" call that gives them their name. Bobwhite are raised commercially on a large scale and thus come in many varieties, with the most common variant being the "red" bobwhite which is a uniform brown but is in all other ways identical to the normal bobwhite quail.

Interestingly enough, it is only unpaired males that make the "bob-white" call at all. This means that if you follow the general guideline of having more females than males, you won't hear "bob-white" very often!

This is the only variety of quail found east of the Mississipi.  For more information on Bobwhite care and propagation, please see the Poultry Science and Technology Guide to feeding and raising Bobwhite quail.
