Bold (AM-424) was launched 14 March 1953 by Norfolk Naval Shipyard; sponsored by Mrs. Porter Hardy, Jr., wife of Representative Hardy from Virginia; and commissioned 25 September 1953, Lieutenant D. C. Pearson in command.
On 16 October 1953 Bold reported to the Commander-in-Chief, Atlantic Fleet, and was assigned to duty with Mine Forces, Atlantic Fleet. From October 1953 to February 1956 Bold underwent shakedown training and overhaul and conducted many special tests and trials for the Bureau of Ships, David Taylor Model Basin, Norfolk Naval Shipyard, and New York Naval Shipyard. She then took part in MINEX 1955. Bold's classification was changed to MSO-424, 7 February 1955. On 2 May 1955 Bold, in company with Mine Division 83, sailed for the Mediterranean for a tour of duty with the 6th Fleet. Bold returned to Charleston, S. C., 4 October 1955. Since that time she has operated at U. S. Naval Mine Defense Laboratory, Panama City, Fla., and Charleston.

Mindiv 83 and 4 participated in LANTHARDEX/MINEX off Norfolk.

Hosted Pakistani Officers for minesweep training.Overhaul at
Charleston.Med Cruise to Italy,France,Greece and Malta.
1959
Rough Atlantic crossing to homeport Charleston.Port
 visit to Savannah ,Georgia.
1960
ROH Norfolk Shipyard.Mindiv 83 and USS Orleans Parish MCS-6 with
Midshipmen cruise the Caribbean area visiting San Juan P.R.
NATO MINEX Sweep Clear V at Shelburne,Nova Scotia with port visits
 to Halifax and Saint John.
1961
Underway with Mindiv 83 and H.M.Van Haverbeke M 902 for her 7th
 Atlantic crossing.Mindiv 83 participated in the movie The
Longest Day.NATO exercise Checkmate 2.Port visits to Rota ,
Barcelona Spain;Athens,Corfu,Suda,Crete,Greece;Naples,Pisa,Florence,
and Izmir Turkey.Hosted HMCS Quinte at Charleston.

LANTPHIBEX 62 Caribbean Area.Searched for and found Dash
helicopter at DamNeck,Virginia.
