On our second weekend, Kathy, Alice, and Murph drove 50 miles (the last 25 miles over a dirt and gravel road) or so southeast of Rio to a lush mountain forest 1.2 kilometers (4000 feet ) above sea level known for its many rivers, waterfalls and natural swimming pools.
As our attire indicates, winter in the mountains gets chilly. In the evenings we used the fireplaces. |

A substantial number of the immigrants who settled in the villages of Visconde de Mauá were Swiss. Many of the pousadas (places to stay overnight) are influenced by the architecture of the Swiss Alps.
