Hello Everyone,
I knew eventually I would have to write this note to you but it has happened sooner than I would have hoped.
This month my lease came due and I tried to negotiate for a smaller space in the same building I occupy.
The landlord wanted me to sign a longer lease than I felt comfortable with and consequently the negotiations went nowhere.
I hope you will forgive me for not being honest when a few of you asked if we were going out of business
and I said no. It was too difficult to say out loud at the time and I was holding out for the last possible moment
As of Dec. 28 Barnett Books will close for good. I wrestled with this decision over the past few months
and changed my mind numerous times, but in the end the figures didn't support continuing the business.
Bookselling has changed drastically since my first store opened in 1972. There is so much competition for
the entertainment dollar, from video games, television, the internet and so on.
In spite of that we still had our own little niche and then... Amazon.com came along. Within
a few years of their appearance in the book market I predicted our demise. We lasted a little longer than I thought we would,
but the recent downturn in the economy was too much to overcome.
The hardest part of closing is saying good-bye to all of you. I've met some wonderful people in the 20
years the warehouse has been open. Some of you have been customers for those 20 years! I can't thank you enough
for helping make the store so successful for so long. And to those who just recently have discovered our warehouse
I'm sorry our time has been too short.
On a personal note I would like to thank my sister Lynn for always being there and giving up all her holiday
weekends to work when we were open. Just about every holiday I think!
The other person I must thank is Donna, the other woman behind the counter. She has been a part of my life
for the past 16 years and only recently started working at the warehouse after retiring from the Meriden Police Dept. Her
enthusiasm and energy brought about the makeover at the warehouse ...I couldn't have done it without her!
And finally, my heartfelt thanks to all of you. My very loyal customers. I will miss you.
I hope to see you in the next few weeks as we wind things down. All books continue to be 50% off.
Our hours will be Tuesday - Sunday from 10-4 closed Mondays. We will be closed on Dec. 24 and Dec. 25 as usual. There will
be a final sale on Friday Dec. 26 - Sunday Dec. 28. I haven't decided what it will be but I'll keep you posted.
My best to you,
Pat
