Let me start by saying I am not a fan of gear. I don't like to read about it or talk about it. Our primary functions as musicians is to play music. That said, gear is important in making sure our music gets out there clearly. I have tried lots of combinations. Here is what I have had success with.

German plywood bass - takes a licking, keeps on ticking.

I take my bass in and out of the car at least 7 times a week. Chicago has extremes of weather. This bass is very stable and sounds good.

I recently picked up a Shen Willow. It is a 3/4 bass with a spruce top and willow ribs and back. This bass has a really buttery sound. It is flatback so it has a strong tone.

Warwick Corvette 5 string.

Fender fretless Jazz with EMG pickups.

Realist pickup - great jazz pickup with very acoustic tone. I use it on both of my basses.

K & K Golden Trinity mic - I have it on the Shen. I tried on the ply bass but I didn't like it much. The Shen is much louder, particularly in front of the bass. The mic works great for that bass.

Sansamp bass driver - Tube emulator preamp. Makes almost the worst amp sound ok. Great for touring or studio work if you don't plan on traveling with your amp. I use it with both electric and upright.

SWR Workingman's 10 and 12.

10 for small gigs

12 for larger gigs

Great amps for the money.

Ampeg B2R and 2x10 cab - on the rare occasion I have to rock
