Bender is a bending unit. He came into the picture when he and Fry shared a suicide booth on new Years' eve day 2999.

Bender joined forces with Fry and Leela to sign up as the new nucleus of the Planet Express Ship's crew. He's active in the support of robot causes, sharing the killbot dream of Killing all humans. Bender has a sharp eye for financial gain and will often leap before he looks if there's profit to be had.

Surly, fatalistic, lazy, and self indulgent, Bender is nonetheless an indispensible member of the Planet Express team. He has also been the Metal Lord of the shrimpkins, the Roswell UFO, a disembodied robot head, a female robot, a wooden robot, a Pharoah, a giant robot, and even once was converted to full humanity.

Bender is a seeker after pleasure. His versatile robotic configuration has allowed him to have romantic encounters with everything between a photon torpedo and the Planet Express ship herself. He needs alcoholic beverages to operate properly, and loves the cool look and smoky exhaust of a fine cigar.
