Back in 1985, I was working as a freelance artist in California, and had a studio in my apartment. During this time, I was fortunate enough to meet Ted Richards, of Forty Year Old Hippie fame. Ted was no longer working strictly on bizarre, counter-culture underground comics, however, but was also the art director of a software company called EPYX Computer Software Inc.--and their latest, greatest project was a title called Temple of Apshai Trilogy.

Temple of Apshai, in a new, advanced form, was being ported to the Commodore platform. Ted commissioned me to illustrate, layout and design the manual for the new EPYX version of the game, with a deadline of about a week. 22 original pen-and-ink illustrations and 81 pages of cut-and-paste and hot-waxing later, the rush-job went to press, with satisfaction all around.

Temple of Apshai Trilogy featured warriors and wizards, ghosts and devils, trolls, monsters and man-sized, man-eating ants.

EPYX and Commodore eventually faded away. The dawning age of the Macintosh, leader of the desktop graphics and graphic design pack, came in like a storm, along with more interactive games and graphics.

On this page are a sampling of the images which were drawn for Temple of Apshai Trilogy.

Enjoy.
