Conference of the Birds - Bee-eaters 2012 Acrylic, Collage, Mixed Media

Inspired by Farid Ud-Din Attar's great mystical poem which is an allegorical rendering of the Islamic doctrine of Sufism-the search for truth through God. It describes the consequences of the conference of the birds of the world when they meet to begin the search for their ideal king, the Simorgh bird.

The Cloister Book Store has this small book available for purchase.

Sartwelle states, "In my artwork I hope to evoke in the viewer a renewed appreciation for nature and her creations. The theme of birds as mystical and spiritual metaphors informs my meditation on life as a fragile, mysterious, joyful and sad experience. Jonathan Rosen writes in his book, The Life of the Skies,” birds seem to possess something that transcends happiness or sadness they simply are." “
