Celtic Goddess of fertility

Sheela Na Gig is alive in Ireland & Britain where over 100 images of her are to be found carved into stone reliefs.  She originated around 1100 AD.  This fertility Goddess is portrayed as naked, with her hands opening her vulva in a gesture of birthing.  Today, she's here to assist White BUffalo Calf Woman give birth to  the next Great Age in a new cycle of time for the Earth. . .  along with numerous other awesome ancestral Goddesses.  Unlike many others, the Goddess Sheela Na Gig leaves no trace of a colourful, instructive legend ----simply her stark image carved in stone tells us that the Sacred Feminine can never be destroyed.   Sheela Na Gig  looks quite old as  she's giving birth through the opening of her womb.

"Smiling lewdly out from rock carvings, this Goddess of ancient Ireland can still be seen in surviving petroglyphs: a grinning, often skeletal face, huge buttocks, full breasts, and bent knees.  What most observers remember best is the self-exposure of the Goddess, for she holds her vagina open with both hands.
She's the greatest symbol of the life-and-death Goddess in the Celtic world, where her stones have been incorporated in Christian churches.  Her name means 'hag'; her grining face & genital display are complicated by the apparent absence of her flesh.  Laughter & passion, birth and death, sex & age do not seem to have been so incompatable to the ancient Irish as they are to the modern world." from Goddesses and Heroines by Patricia Monaghan

The Fethard Connection

Up to the 9th January 1990, Fethard had four Sheela na gig in the locality, one at Watergate Street, one at the Augustinian Abbey, one at Kiltinan Church and the last at Kiltinan Castle. On that Tuesday, in January 1990, the best example of the local 'Sheelas' was stolen from Kiltinan Church and is still missing today. We have never given up hope that, some day, 'Sheela' will return home to her native Fethard. The 'Wanted Poster' was issued by Fethard Historical Society in 1990.
