According to Lakota legend, 19 generations ago a tribe of buffalo hunters were suffering an unprecedented hardship. The millions of buffalo out on the great plains had suddenly disappeared.  Never before had the buffalos abandoned the people who were growing more and more distressed.  Eventually, in the autumn 'moon of the ripe plums' these people were visited by a spirit woman who brought them teachings to restore balance to their lives.  She spoke about a long cycle of time for Mother Earth.  One day this cycle would end & a new one begin.  She promised to return to help them  through this transition.  As the people watched her leave & nearly vanish over the horizon, they beheld a white buffalo calf standing in her place.  In 1994, a non~albino white buffalo was born at a small hobby farm in southern Wisconsin.  A Lakota medicine man gave this calf the name "Miracle".  At only 10 years of age, she died in Septembre, 2004.  Two years later, August 2006, in the middle of a lightning storm at this same small farm, another non~albino white buffalo was born!   If the small farm conditions were so inadequate that "Miracle" died prematurely, why on Earth would White Buffalo Calf Woman place another white buffalo in this same situation?  Talk about mysteries!

A few Lakotas sat around discussing the name "Miracle" given to this first sacred white buffalo calf, which grew into an ordinary brown.  They say that the word, 'miracle', isn't in their vocabulary.  In Indian Country, amazing mystical occurrances happen all the time.  I say it's a miracle  that this special buffalo  survives in such miserable conditions -- the same 2 acre display pen of mud & manure with 3 other buffalos subsisting on a diet of sour corn silage & moldy alfalfa hay --- worse than a zoo ---  perhaps this is the miracle?  On the other hand, buffalo are great survivors.

Numerous white buffalos have been born since the August 1994 birth of  "Miracle".  Her appearance is a sign that White BUffalo Calf Woman is keeping her promise to return at this juncture of the Shift of the Ages.   The Buffalo Goddess is here to guide the people back to being wise Earthlings during the intense transition from the old cycle of time  into the next one.  This revival of the Sacred Feminine  correlates with traditional teachings of the Hopi Prophecy,  the Hindu Kali Yuga, & the Mayan long count T'zolkin calendar that ends in 2012.   The wobble of Earth's tilted axis creates a 26,000 year cycle dilineated by the zodiac of constellations.  The wobbling began 12,000 years ago with a tremendous Earth cataclysm.  Our planet has wobbled half way around the circle, and we're really entering the Aquarian Age.

Buffalo have a long legacy of being abused by the humans.
In a 10 year time span, 60 million buffalo were eliminated from the Great Plains.

". . . they (the eastern industrialists) invented & patented machinery whereby the bones could be ground dry and rapaidly, and thus retain all their different valuable properties.  A company was at once organized and commenced whos grinding capacity is now from 30 to 50 tons a day . . . After the bones are unshipped they are picked over and assorted.  Of the refuse the common fertilizing phosphates are made.  The other bones are ground into bone black; it is used exclusively for refining sugar."

"Miracle" after hoof surgery. Brown buffalo were never camoflauged in the wild prairies.

I printed out this photo on  8 X 11 inch paper, then slipped the sheet into the snug pocket of the laptop computer case.  Several days later when the photo was brought out, something organic was on the page.   Spider had squished herself on the paper right at the feet of the sacred buffalo!  What's the message?  Spider grandmother is a creatrix in many traditions.  As for White Buffalo Calf Woman's story, the keeper of the sacred buffalo calf pipe, Arvol Looking Horse, was bit on the cheek by Spider when he was 7 years old.  He fell into a coma.  For two weeks he lay in hospital with a dangerously high fever.  It was determined afterwards that this spider bite caused him to be sterile.  Without the pressure of fiancially supporting a family & the distractions of helping children adapt to modern lifestyle, the pipe keeper could better perform his spiritual responsibilities.  By comparison, the Dalai Lama of Tibet is focused 100% on his role as a holy man.

Spider has many stories which invite contemplation.  At this moment, the world wide web is providing a method for weaving the intricate stories of White BUffalo Calf Woman's return !

"Miracle's" grave

She asked, "what crime did I commit to get myself into the hell realm?"

It's been said that "Miracle" died of natural causes. From my experience as a buffalo rancher, the normal lifespan of buffalo is 20 to 30 years. Why did "Miracle" die so young? Here’s an explanation: If a pig is placed out onto the wild prairies, how long will that pig survive? If a (sacred) buffalo is confined to a muddy pen & fed the diet usually given to pigs, how long will that buffalo live?

"Miracle's" corpse was stuffed and mounted and can be seen as an attraction in the gift shop at the farm.

She was stunted in her growth & could never shed clumps of her winter coat.

What a great mystery!  Another white buffalo calf is born at the Wisconsin farm & he's not even genetically related to "Miracle".   Evidently "Miracle" died prematurely due to crowded conditions & improper diet.  Then, why did White BUffalo Calf Woman placed another white buffalo calf into cramped conditions at this same small Wisconsin farm?
I like to say that this wild buffalo Goddess is returned with a strong Buddhist influence.  The Buddha teaches that all humans strive to attain happiness.  However, suffering prevails instead.  Our challenge is to eliminate the causes of suffering ~ attachment, anger, and ignorance.  Through the application of compassion & wisdom  enlightenment can be realized.   Several years ago, the Dalai Lama visited "Miracle" in her pen.  He went there incognito and people thought he was just another Buddhist monk.  I imagine that his eyes saw the incredible suffering that "Miracle" the sacred buffalo experienced.  One time I showed a photo of the white buffalo calf to a Tibetan friend.  She asked, "How many Native Americans revere this buffalo as a sign of their important prophecy?"  I estimated a few thousand.  "Okay," she continued, "all those Indians care about the well-being of their sacred buffalo that is being help captive by only one white man. What's wrong with those Indians?  We Tibetans give our holy men, such as the Dalai Lama, the very best of care."  The picture of the suffering sacred buffalo really didn't make sense to my Tibetan friend.
Another explanation for these white buffalo in Wisconsin is physical.  A Muskogee Indian family had a retinue of pets. One winter these animals all gave birth to white offspring.  The Indians suspect that they were living on land that was a dumping ground for depleted Uranium tailings.

^^ more about OYA & the sudden death of white buffalo calf

To the surprize of many people, on Novembre 27, 2006, the three month old white buffalo calf that was called, "Miracle's Second Chance", was struck dead by a lightning bolt.  Along with four brown buffalos at the same farm.  To begin with, lightning storms in late November are not typical in southern Wisconsin.

Perhaps the lightning storm birth and death of this 2006 white buffalo calf is White Buffalo Calf Woman's way to demonstrate her presence and her power.  As well as her penchant for working with other impressive ancient Goddesses from different traditions.
