Sweeney marker Though the banjo was brought to America by Africans, this historical marker located near Appomatax, VA, notes that a Scots- Irishman named Joel Walker Sweeney (1810-1880) supposedly added the fifth string or the "drone" string. Incidentally, that is NOT Sweeney standing next to sign.
