Modicum: Morass

Song Lyrics

by Tom Minkler

deliver me
my clock ticks for you
my heart's in your hands
bedbug (undercover lover)
come true
just wanna rock
nina
rock
don't jump the gun (hold your fire)
lookin' down
fate
don't you want your own?
the memory of one moment
livin' in the riddle
oh, judy
mother nature's daughter
in an angel's little hand
eye of the hurricane
state of mind
mind your own business (jeffrey dahmer's lament)
music of the ages

Morass is tommy gun.  Written, directed, performed, programmed, screwed up, re-done, and finally given up on by tom. Nobody else did shit.
Thanks to Free for the line "before they raise the parking rate."  Chorus for "Bedbug" inspired accidentally by Sabine Baring-Gould (1865) and Joseph Barnby (1868).  Thanks to Mauricio Rodriguez for the line "I know she loves me; she just doesn't know it yet." "In An Angel's Little Hand" inspired by Mari Diaz. "Nina" inspired unknowingly by Heidi Uribe. "Your Heart's In My Hands" inspired by Thea (wherever you are). "Don't Jump the Gun" inspired by Theresa Behdjet. "Oh, Judy" inspired unknowingly a long time ago by Judy MacIntyre. "My Clock Ticks For You" inspired by Sheri Hamel. "Come True" inspired by Keri Tahara. "Mind Your Own Business" dedicated to Jeffrey's victims. "State of Mind" inspired by Rodney King.
Tom wishes to thank: his cool family (Bill, Bea, Don, Marge and Sharon; Nan and Pop); Diane, Marguerite, Kathy, Jocelyn, Danno & Ben (of The Janitors & Nervous Romance fame; if you're out there, let's jam), Keith, Dexter, Hans, Bob and Brian, Adam, Amanda and Jasper, everyone he's ever met, every song he's ever heard, and everyone who gives a damn.  May the force of life be with you.  To all the other girls i fell in love with over the years but was too afraid to tell (Connie, Ann, Lorraine, and especially Terri Dunmyre): I'm an idiot for not even trying and I still can't forgive myself for everything I didn't do.  "Bedbug (Undercover Lover)" is for you.

Deliver Me From Blue

Is she just another girl with another pretty face;
or a temporary memory that i just can't erase?
There's so many that i meet; wish i could love them all,
but they just pass by on the street or drift on down the hall.

Chorus:
Take me to heaven; take me to hell;
take me there and back and love me just as well.
I don't care what you do, 'cause i'm in love with you.
Take me away; deliver me from blue.

An endless line of faces; perfume and shining earrings;
can't see the forest for the trees; can't even find a clearing.
Is she just another toss of hair; another lovely leg?
The more i say i just don't care, the more i seem to beg.

Is she just another whisper; another killer smile;
an assassin dressed in satin; just to take me down in style?
A whisp of hair and sweet shampoo; i'm in love with you.
Won't you kiss me once or twice and leave me lost and blue?

Oh, i don't know what to do; i don't know what to say.
They just leave me lost and blue and then they go away.
Do they even care if i live or don't?
Do they even notice me?  I guess i'll never know.

My Clock Ticks For You

Sheri, Sheri,
you are so very
pretty/brazen/sweet/fly
Sheri, Sheri,
you are so very
fine/amazin'/neat/high.

Chorus:
My clock ticks for you;
got rocks in my shoes.
Your box trips a wire
and it knocks out my blues.
I talk, talk to you,
like I got something new;
I can't quench the fire
when you walk like you do.

Bridge:
My socks fell down
into my shoes
that day you rocked
my world with the
news; the day you
kissed me and I
heard the music
go off in my head.

My Heart's In Your Hands

I ran into the girl i love just the other day.
She said she had moved in with him; we didn't have much to say.
she smiled and said how good it was to see me;
but how good could it be if she never calls me back.

Chorus:
I'll hold your hand.
I'll understand.
I'll even give all my songs to the band,
but this one is yours;
i did the best that i can;
'cause you're in my heart
and my heart's in your hands

Now i don't have her number or her address anymore.
I can't just stop by casually and knock on her door.
When i think of her with him it crushes my heart.
I want to show how much i love her
but i don't know where to start.

She is just a waitress but she makes me cry.
I can't stand to be away from her and i don't know why.
She is so beautiful; she's got class and style.
If i can't kess her, maybe i can make her smile.

Sittin' here singing' about you don't do no good.
I never seem to call you but i wish i would.
I'd leave it up to God if i really believed
that if i just sat here you'd marry me.

Can't you tell i love you but you won't know what to do?
Won't you call me up and let me listen to you?
The sound of your voice is the most beautiful sound.
Why don't you answer me?  Please come around.

Bridge:
Because of your smile i get up in the morning.
Because of your style i can sleep at night.
If you didn't care i would feel so blue.
If you weren't out there i would still be yearning for you.

Bedbug (U.C. Lover)

I'm a lover undercover;
my identity's a secret.
If i tell her, i might lose her love;
this way i get to keep it,
and i know that she loves me;
she just doesn't know it yet.
If i tell her, she might laugh
but that's a chance she'll never get.

Chorus:
I'm too afraid to take the chance
and so i'll sit and cry.
The tears that fall would rather dance,
but they'll just roll on by.
I'll cry myself to sleep again;
night is drawing nigh;
while somewhere blissful lovers kiss
beneath the starry sky

If i can keep it quiet
(i'm too afraid to show it),
i'll love her always in my dreams
and she will never know it;
so i'll just sit and watch
and hope she'll notice me.
At least i know that in my mind
our love will always be.

She walks around oblivious;
someone better warn her,
and tell her not to break my heart
while i hide in the corner.
If i never tell her,
she won't know what she's missing;
but i long ever day to touch
those lips that i'm not kissing.

Bridge:
I've confessed my love inside my mind
a hundred thousand times.
If only she could read and see
the love that's in these rhymes.

Come True

As beautiful as an angel;
as soothing as the light.
Mysterious as a stranger;
just passing in the night.
Misty morning dances
taking chances
laugh beneath the trees
deep in a forest in the land of love
awash with falling leaves.

Chorus:
Come true; come true;
i’m in love with you.
Won’t you kiss me in my sleep
and wake my dreams from blue?
Wake me at the dawn of time,
with earth’s first sleepy morning dew;
when laughter was a distant dream,
i fell in love with you.

A wind that whispers nothing
crescendoes to a chorus;
a soothing breeze
that moves the leaves
and trembles through the forest.
Gentle creatures shyly peering,
listening for the sound;
for the glory of a princess;
to see the queen of beauty crowned.

Bridge:
Whether you are real is a mystery,
but the way i feel, you're my destiny.
What the future will reveal,
i can't conceive,
but the gel will congeal
if you just believe.

Undaunted, rushing past me,
runs the sound of tiny feet;
to find the crowning glory
of the love they long to meet.
She gazes at the flowers,
smiling brightly by the stream;
and stops to touch the petals
of my heart, and wake the dream.

Just Wanna Rock(, Dammit)

Come in here, please and slap my cheek;
been sleeping way too much this week.
I need a kick and i need it fast.
I hope these lazy blues don't last.

Chorus:
The door stays shut unless i knock.
I've got the strength to break the lock.
I want to move but i'm still talking.
Really, i just wanna rock
My speedboat's running at the dock.
I'm tied up in the starting block.
I want to run but i'm still walking.
Really; i just wanna rock.

Am i weak or am i strong?
The road to fame takes way too long.
If i can't get up off the floor,
i'll never make it through that door.

This stupid job i do all day
is bullshit, but at least i'm paid.
I just can't take it anymore.
Can't stay awake when i'm so bored.

Bridge:
I just wanna rock.
I just wanna roll.
I wanna bring the house down;
i wanna steal the show.
I wanna blow you away from the top of the bill,
I came to play, and baby you know i will.

I know that i'm as smart as hell.
got no experience- oh, well!
The world's my oyster; i'm a pearl
trapped in the darkness of my shell.

Nina

Nina, Nina, Nina;
she's my cardio cantina;
the libation of my heart.
Oh, the vibrations that she starts;
the liberation of a nation
of elation torn apart.
Through a war i cannot lose
into the party that she started;
it's her love so true;
she frees me from the blues.

Chorus:
I love Nina
I love Nina

Nina, Nina, Nina;
she's my bedtime ballerina;
gives new meaning to the term
"race relations"; makes me
squirm in jubilation.
Shining through the time that's blue,
dancing shoes tap to the music;
i will lose it to her fancy
when she dances with me
truly frees me from the blues.

Nina, Nina, Nina;
she's my sunny day marina.
We'll sail away upon the sea;
into the sunset, her and me.
The sun will shine for her so fine;
so soft and warm, must be divine.
From grapes of gold, no sweeter wine
has ever come to blow my mind.
I love her so;
if i am hers, she's mine.

Bridge:
Nina, Nina, Nina:
she's my rock and roll arena;
i'll turn her up, 'til she won't go
any higher, then i'll blow
her amplifier.

Rock

When i wake up and down and out
i hear the humming, humming.
When i go into town i hear the
drumming, drumming, drumming.
The music's playing louder,
in my head it's getting louder.
Inside i hear the crowd,
they're shouting "more!"
it's getting louder.
Banging 'round inside my head,
the screaming sound that
knocks me dead
crescendoes to a volume
so obscene and so unreal
that my ears have bled
but not before my head explodes
and turns the world
into shades of red.

Can't stamp me out, i'll scream and shout;
not one of you can stop me.
My battered brain remains unchained;
the blues will always rock me.
Can't strap me down or make me frown,
not ever, now or never.
Unbound, i'll always be around;
i'll rock your world forever.

Chorus:
Rock
Rock
Rock and roll
Rock
Rock
Rock and roll

It's a sin to hold it in;
suffer not in silence.
The overload that will explode
will wreck you with a violence.
Don't hesitate, or it's too late;
don't let anyone stop you.
Before they raise the parking rate;
shout it- "i will rock you!"

Bridge:
All hail the fanfare,
the rock and roll.
All hail the night gale,
the rock and roll.
All hail the fanfare;
all hail the king.
Feel for the freedom and
let it ring.

To please the crowd, appease them now;
oh, and how they rock.
This rock and roll that's in our soul,
it screams aloud in shock.
From a nightmare to a dream,
the sweet release will break the lock.
From in the dream, the minions scream;
the hordes, they holler, "Rock!"

Don't Jump The Gun (Hold Your Fire)

I might try too hard, but it ain't that easy.
I might move too fast, but i can't slow down.
Faster than a speeding bullet flying high off the ground;
but i can't leap tall buildings in a single bound.

Chorus:
Don't jump the gun or it might go off.
She might be the one or she might not.
If your aim is true, set her in your sights,
but hold your fire until it's right.

I got all excited when i saw the loot;
drew too fast and shot myself in the foot.
Instead of ringing her bell, i tried a drive-by shooting;
knocked down the door and lost the booty.

I'm a freelance man, i'm a gun for hire,
but i don't get loaded 'til i'm ready to fire;
'cause i shoot, shoot, shoot to kill,
but i don't jump the gun and i don't botch the thrill.

Lookin' Down

Didn't mean to fall in love
Didn't mean to lose my heart
Didn't mean to call her bluff
Didn't mean to fall apart
Now i'm crumblin'
and mumblin';
think i'm losin' my head.
Please don't pull the trigger
and shoot me full of lead.

Chorus:
I'm looking down the barrel of a loaded gun.
It just don't seem fair, when she's my only one.
I wasn't lookin' for trouble, was just lookin' for fun;
now i'm looking down the barrel of a loaded gun.

You opened up my heart, and i fell in.
Drop that grenade, now; don't pull the pin!
Please don't pull the trigger and blow me away.
Together we can figure out a better way.
What can i do to get you to surrender,
and turn you from a murderess into a mender?

They didn't warn me that you were armed and dangerous;
a regular army; an airborne rangeress.
I'm a prisoner of war in the Geneva convention.
Don't want to be a casualty; an honorable mention;
a footnote in the history of your long and lonely life;
i'd rather be the mister(y), and you my only wife.

Bridge:
A casualty of love caught in the crossfire of emotion
blown away one stormy day; another love explosion.
It's a jungle there, so just beware; they don't play by the rules.
If all is fair in love and war, why do i always lose?

 Fate

Fate,
how can you be so cruel
to take away my whole world;
to take my life away from me? Oh, you;
don’t you ever wish you had a heart
like mine, like ours,
so you could feel love, too?
But pain’s there too,
when you’re feeling blue,
there’s emptiness in everything you do.

Chorus:
You
Fool
Simple twist,
the fickle fist
of fate

Fate,
how can you be so cold
to let us all grow old?
And though the truth be told,
so hard to hold onto…
When all the love that longs to last
has come to pass,
we hope that love will last.
We know we need to know,
we’ve got to let it go,
but will we see in time to save our soul?

Fate,
how can you be so blind
to feeling so unkind,
the way you blow my mind all the time?
And so I live my life in pantomime
and try to find
the rhythm and the rhyme.
The rhythm and the rhyme,
so elusive, so divine;
the fight to find the truth in our own time

Fate,
how can you be so sure,
to let us all endure?
We’ll never find a cure for your lure.
Without a thought to us, your wanderlust
thrives, imbibes,
and laughs while we cry.
Then that wonderful surprise
will steal across the sky,
but still it seems we’re never satisfied
I wonder why?

Don't You Want Your Own?

You didn’t have enough
so you took out a loan.
He told you he loved you
and he bought you a stone.
You know he is hers
but you won’t leave him alone.
Don’t you want someone that’s yours?
Don’t you want your own?

Someday he’ll leave her
and come stay with you?
Of course he would say that,
what else would he do?
His children are wondering
why Daddy’s not home.
He’s out with some poor thing
who can’t find her own.

Chorus:
Don’t you want your own,
to have and to hold,
to keep you warm
when the nights are cold;
for worse and for better,
through thick and thin,
through the stormy weather
‘til the better end;
to love and to honor,
‘til death to you part,
from this day forward;
one hand, one heart?
Won’t you find yourself a friend
when you find yourself alone?
Won’t you find someone that’s yours?
Don’t you want your own?

He’s got the best of both worlds;
the hugs and the kissing.
She’s got his kids
and all the things that you’re missing.
What are you thinking
while you sit there alone?
How nice your life would be
if you had your own.

How can you love someone
who won’t be true?
You know the way he treats her
is the way he’ll treat you.
If you love him make him leave her, first;
but make sure you’re sure.
Don’t be surprised to find
he won’t come back anymore.

Bridge:
If you don’t believe in yourself,
you’ll have to take what you get;
so don’t settle for less,
don’t give up yet.
There’s someone for you;
someone else who’s alone.
When you find love together,
then you’ll have your own.

Livin' In The Riddle

As long as that tape keeps rolling,
i’ll keep singing the blues.
As long as time goes strolling along,
i’ll be wearing out shoes;
walking down the sidewalk,
rocking down the road;
just trying to get where i’m supposed to be.

Chorus:
I don’t mind doing my time;
i’ll squeeze a little lovin’ in the middle.
Just trying to find some peace of mind
while i do a little livin’ in the riddle.

As long as that camera keeps rolling,
i’ll keep doing my part.
As long as time goes strolling along,
i’ll be true to my heart;
reading each scene
from a script i’ve never seen;
just trying to see who i’m supposed to be.

Bridge:
I don't mind at all
when my back's up against the wall;
if I can't figure out what it's all about,
i just walk on down the hall.

As long as that spotlight’s shining,
i’ll keep dancing away.
As long as that clock keeps winding around,
i’ll be facing the day;
repeating the routine;
sleeping in between;
just trying to be who i’m supposed to be.

Oh, Judy

Oh, Judy;
ever since you sat behind me in the movies,
i've been feelin' so fine  and so groovy.
Meet me at the love-in and we'll do some lovey dovin',
make a pie in the sky; gitchee-goo me.

Chorus:
Judy, so fine, will you ever be mine?
Guess i'm gonna have to  stand in line.
Don't leave me holding my own like a rolling stone
oh, Judy.
Oh Judy, so fine, always loose in my mind,
If i have to keep this up, i'll go blind.
Don't send me out on the run with a smokin' gun,
oh, Judy.

Oh, Judy;
ever since you sat behind me in that class,
i just couldn't stop looking at your...lashes;
so long and so sweet.  When you walk down the street,
all the guys whistle as you pass.

Oh, Judy;
when i see you walking down the hall,
i can't think of anything at all
to say to you tonight.  Will you be my wife,
or at least hang out at the mall with me?

In an Angel's Little Hand

Mesmerized , by those eyes that took me by suprise;
those laughing eyes that smile so high;
too bright to light the sky.
The highlight of my life to see;
a high life's promise rendered;
released from soothing has-been jazz;
turned into a contender

Chorus:
A butterfly in paradise in love's ecstatic throes;
a fairy tale without a price, so as the story goes,
comes true and frees a dreamer, released from never land,
into always and forever, in an angel's little hand.

Ever joyous, as a clown; the sunshine turns a frown
into a smile, and never seen; a sun that burns so brown.
Eyelash brushes silky cheek; a tender hand set down
to reach for fingertips of glory; love without a sound.

Hesitation's torture; a chance to hold the world.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained; an angel- just a girl.
A kiss; a twitch of touching lips; whispers; soft as hair,
to vanish into wonderland; nirvana, on a dare.

Bridge:
The moon and stars are Mari's;
are the nights too deep to sleep?
If I should cry before I wake,
for her- my soul to keep.

State Of Mind

It's about time for a revolution
in the state of my mind and in its execution.
The state of the union is all out of tune;
the bond that unites us is feeble.
The ones we elect to serve and protect
can't change the mood of the people.

Chorus:
I'm starting to find
it's the state of my mind
that keeps me under sedation.
Together we'll find
the ties that unbind,
and free the soul of our nation.

Color's just an illusion, creating confusion
and tipping the scales of justice.
It's not so amusing when you're the one losing
and justice don't seem so blind.
Don't sit on the couch in a potato-head slouch;
get up to change the station.
Try to recall how to tear down the wall
and free the soul of our nation.

Bridge:
No remote control can run this show,
there are no stage directions;
so play your part performance art
and make the love connection.
The stage is set, your part is cast;
you're the director and the writer.
Don't be content to be the audience;
you're a lover and a fighter.

If we follow our leaders they'll take us to hell;
we've got to do it ourselves.
It's up to us to wipe off the dust;
and save the face of our nation;
to do what we must; to be true and be just;
save a place for the next re-generation.

Mind Your Own Business

(Jeffrey Dahmer's Lament)

got their brains in my room left
some flesh on the floor
my apartment's a tomb just don't
walk through that door
i've got drugs in your soup
poison in your glass im
your friend and your pal i'm
a pain in your ass.

chorus:
mind your own business
everybody said so
everyone did and
now they're all dead
can you smell the stench from
behind my closed doors please
don’t leave me alone can't
face these walls any more.

skulls in the icebox
crossbones for lunch
a heart to eat later and
a poisonous punch
handcuffs on the doorknob
a knife beneath my bed what
would my neighbors say if they
knew all my friends were dead

nobody noticed when
i cut off their heads
they were too busy
watching tv instead
they tried to get away but
you know i was so nice that
they came back for more and
then they paid the price.

bridge:
i guess its just an obsession what
else can i say ill
make my confession then
ill go away i
feel kind of bad though when
all i see is red i
feel kind of sad no
i wish i was dead

Music Of The Ages

Something great is stirring deep inside my soul;
a revelation is occurring; i need to rock and roll.
It's time to get it started; i've got to get a-rockin.
I've been waiting for the good times; i hear them knocking.
Poetry in motion; rock is in my soul.
Music is the notion that puts me on a roll.
A daily devotion that only God could know;
i hear the commotion; got to make it to the show.

Chorus:
The music of the ages comes down from on high
to guitar-playing sages from the tears in children's eyes.
Through the joy and pain of living, i hear the minstrel's cry;
release my soul to heaven and my song into the sky.

Some folks pray at church; i worship at the stadium;
my cathedral's an arena; my chapel, a palladium.
The choirboys are rockers; the priests are stacks of amps;
the congregation is rejoicing as it's walking up the ramps.
There's a certain smell of incense and candles made by Bic ®;
the crowd is hushed and waiting for the blast of that first lick.
We sing our hymns in unison; rock anthems forged from pain.
Make the choice to use your voice and join in our refrain.

Though everything is separate, it's all part of one big whole.
Part of that is music; part of that is rock and roll.
When the band is all done singing, i wish they'd play again.
My ears will still be ringing; i'll still say "Amen."
You don't know what you're missing
if you're looking for the spirit.
I know if you would listen, you couldn't help but hear it.
So don't ignore the music from the membership of souls;
a voice from God's own spirit; the heart of rock and roll.
