Dan Knapp sent this poem to Juanita Torrence-Thompson, Editor-in-Chief
of Möbius, The Poetry Magazine, asking for it to be published in
hopes that people would donate money to help the people in HAITI
who have suffered so. Dan, who recently won 2nd prize in the Mobius
Dr. Zylpha Mapp Robinson International Poetry Competition asks for
nothing except that the people of HAITI be helped by your DONATIONS
-- whatever you can afford. You can rush donations through clintonfoundation.org/haiti or text "haiti" to 20222 to make a 10-dollar donation (the $10 will appear on your next cell phone bill).
in a moment
(for the suffering in Haiti)
i am living death
it’s everywhere
in everything i see
the stench is on my clothes
it’s in my hair
i feel it in the air
i hear it from the living
buried and suffering in pain
desperate cries and moans
of people dying in their tombs
that once were kitchens
bath or living rooms
i hear babies dying alone
they’re so afraid
they’re so alone
God, help them
let them live in your home
i breathe death
it fills the air
i taste it in my food
and in the water i drink
everything’s saturated
yet death’s thirst
cannot be quenched
i am death walking
i walk among those still living
standing naked
with nothing of my own
broken yet still alive
drowning in helplessness
where is hope?
faith is shattered
like the glass in the frame
holding a picture
of the one i loved
damn it, God
how is this explained?
so much is gone
in a moment
so much is over
never to return
never to recover
no laughter of children
playing in yards
no barking dogs
at cars whizzing by
no birds singing
from trees in the fresh air
no people talking
in churches
or markets
or on the streets
hope writhes with the living
all has been silenced
but for pain and grief
death goes on living
among the rubble and debris
but dies in the hearts
of our loved ones
now resting in peace

Below is an EXCERPT of review:
“Calling Möbius a poetry magazine is like calling ERIC CLAPTON a guitar
player. It’s a lavishly-produced, silver-covered (no, I am not joking)
exhibition-space for all sorts of poetry, published with a
stanza-staggering professional allure that should scare off small
magazines everywhere. Published from Flushing, New York, it is
celebrating with this issue its quarter-century with no fewer than 148
poets on display, all under a variety of theme headings, such as
“Family & Relationships,” “Art & Culture,” “The World About Us.,” and so on. This last category containing work on Darfur, the murder of Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya, the Middle East, Iraq, and a scathing satire, “The Cabinet Talks War,” from Arthur Gottlieb. Anyone
who thinks American poets aren’t engaging with these subjects should
think again. Some readers over here may recall the poet SAMUEL MENASHE,
who visited Galway a few years ago... I have not run into Val Nolan, who
is listed as teaching poetry at NUI Galway. His poem is dedicated to
Megan Buckley, whom I think I may know. The work is wonderfully varied,
a veritable anthology, and submissions are welcome. WELL WORTH A LOOK.”
