President Sharon Woods reported on the status of WN memberships and thanked those present for giving her the opportunity to
meet with us.
Scottie Hudson, a member of the Greensboro NC Tarheels Unit 44 spoke on the origin of the acronym WAVES
and the history leading up to its demise in February 1972 by then CNO, ADM Zumwalt’s Z-gram # 116 which eliminated the
acronym, the position of “Director of Women” and opened the door to women to serve in most every naval designation.
Harriet Howard, VAVS Representative,
reported on her activities during the year, emphasizing the need for all WN members to report their volunteer hours—especially

memberships. The report of the 2006 Convention showed a profit of $2000 +/-.

The
five most dangerous things
you will hear in the Navy:
Seaman saying, "I learned this in Boot Camp..."
A Petty Officer saying, "Trust
me, Sir..."
A Lieutenant JG saying, "Based on my experience..."
A Lieutenant saying, "I was just thinking..."
A
Chief chuckling, "Watch this schit..."

We all went to Boot Camp but why
is it called Boot Camp? This is said to have come
from the days just after the Civil War. At the time, experienced, or "true" sailors, did much of their work barefoot, especially
when scrubbing the decks. New recruits from the Midwest did not like doing it in this fashion, and so would go ashore as soon
as possible to buy a pair of rubber boots to protect their feet.
