The army-issued death certificate indicates that Hosea had not been paid since February 1st - the army owed him backpay of $42 upon his death on May 30, 1864.

Hosea's parents applied for his pension on July 25th, 1864, on grounds of hardship.

A personal inventory issued by the military stated that upon his death, Hosea Barnes's earthly possessions consisted of:

    • 1 Uniform Jacket
    • 1 Flannel Shirt
    • 2 Pairs Socks
    • 1 Woolen Blanket
    • 1 Rubber Blanket
    • 1 Bible
    • 5 Handkerchiefs
    • 1 Portfolio
    • 1 Purse
    • 1 Razor
    • 2 cents
