Shoreline Erosion Rates
The maps and data below were provided by the Bureau of
Economic Geology at the University of Texas at Austin.
The maps depict the average long-term shoreline change, or
average annual erosion rate. An average number--5-10
feet/year, for example--does not mean necessarily that each
year 5-10 feet of beach is eroded. Depending on storms and
tides, the beach may remain relatively stable for several
years, then suffer 30-40 feet loss in a single storm. In
general, a 5-10 foot erosion rate indicates that, over time,
the shoreline is moving landward at a fairly high rate.
