Information About Vitiligo

by Mark Mitchell

I have vitiligo, which is an uncommon skin condition that has to do with the pigmentation of the skin. Vitiligo is a genetic condition that doctors do not know much about.

Vitiligo is not "icky". The pigmentation of the skin disappears in certain areas, through a combination of genetics and exposure to the sun. Although the white patches look different, they do not feel different to someone else when touched.

Vitiligo is not contagious. I have vitiligo by the roll of the genetic dice. You cannot get it from me.

Vitiligo does not hurt. Never did, never will.

Having vitiligo means I should stay out of the sun when I can. Although I continue to play outdoors (windsurfing, volleyball, mountain biking, etc.), I do try to wear sunscreen and hats so the patches grow more slowly.
