Frontier

I know not how it came to be
That man first dared to sail the sea
And ride the wind and chart the skies
Far from the shore where the seagull cries.

Why did the sailor of yore risk it all -
The void at the edge - the terrible fall!
What voice kept him going when the journey'd begun
As the land slipped away and night swallowed the sun?

Land-dwelling creature, man craves solid ground.
Yet he challenged the ocean where dangers abound.
For its call is compelling, the pull of the tide,
So the battle ensued and the sea was defied.

Give thanks modern voyager, who travels with ease,
To those spirited soldiers who conquered the seas.
Take courage from them when you face your frontier -
There'll be no turning back, no surrender to fear!

Words

In a secret chamber of my heart
Where there's no room for a lie,
Not even one small tiny part,
Where there's found no alibi,
In that closely guarded center
Behind thick walls that none can scale,
Where deceit may never enter
And hypocrisy will fail,
There's a truth that's carved in stone,
One that took some time to chisel -
Monolithic, cold, alone -
Yet it makes my spirit sizzle.

Often have I, silent, prayed
The solemn holy words unspoken,
Words that I have not betrayed -
And to this day my faith's unbroken.

Remember what you now shall read
Words you ne'er again might see.
Take them with you - pay them heed -
Reflect on them most carefully.

"Do not trust the words of others -
Parents, teachers, friends, or brothers.
Alone the wine of wisdom drink,
For truth comes but to those who think.
And when some people bully you,
Dictating what to think or do,
Fight them with the battle cry
That guards your mind with the sacred word: why?"

Love and Death

Of what to write but love and death?
Fear the first more than the second.
We suffer only one last breath
But love's pain can't be reckoned.

Remember

The sun that warms my skin today
May not be here tomorrow,
And bright blue skies may go away
Replaced by rain and sorrow.

The sweet soft chirping of dawn's birds
And babbling brooks' reassuring words -
These may not always reach my ear -
'Tis loss of precious love I fear.

So I'll capture now this splendid scene
And oft recall this field of green.
Then summer's breeze so soft and warm
Will shield my heart from winter's storm.

At Times When I, With Spirits Low

At times when I, with spirits low,
Seek a place where souls do soar,
The lofty cliff to which I go
Each time seems taller than before.

The ocean, bluer than the sky,
Shows not a wave from that great height.
I stand where eagles cannot fly
I touch the sun - I roar with might!

I see the curving of the earth,
I feel it hurl through endless space.
Up here no need for joke or mirth
Or other creatures of my race.

To live, to breathe is joy enough
I am the lord of my domain.
Down below the seas are rough
High up here there is no pain.

Infinity is revealed to me,
I drink from its pure fountain.
Life's not always ecstasy
But I have climbed my mountain.

Niagara Falls

Falling water, rising mist,
Shimmering liquid cliff, sun-kissed.
Each drop has a moment's glory,
Each relates this very same story:

Long before I joined this fountain,
Home was a peaceful snowy mountain.
Melting spring gave gentle nudge,
Friends beckoned - yet I didn't budge,
Till fateful moment of surprise
As I watched the flowing waters rise
And sweep me into destiny's call -
My journey to this waterfall.
Who knows what lies in store for me?
Some say a journey to the sea.
Then, a westbound cloud I'll board,
Once again a journey toward
I know not where, I know not when,
Until the cycle starts again.

Jamaica

I hear the waves from distant shores,
The sleeping sounds of ocean snores.
I dream of distant lands that touch
These waters that I love so much.
This vast soft bed which is the sea,
With Earth and sky in harmony,
Mends my storm-worn sinking soul
And once again makes me feel whole.

The Land and the Sea

White-capped soldiers of the sea,
Pounding the shore relentlessly,
Under the watchful eye of the moon
And the whistling wind and the seagull's tune,
Waging an eternal war -
Wave after wave, they attack the shore.

But ever does the land repel the sea,
For the weathered rock is a brave defender.
Let the battle rage to infinity,
The coast fights on - no surrender!
And the sun shines its light on the valiant land
As the tide retreats and the sight is grand.

So do I fight each trying day
To keep a horde of foes at bay.
Haters who won't let me be,
Who through their daily cruelty
Would breach the wall that I defend,
Inflicting gashes slow to mend,
Scorching my spirit, assaulting my soul,
Slowly eroding my self-control,
Robbing me of peace and joy -
All I build they would destroy.

But I have donned the armor of love
And I raise this banner to the skies above:
I swear by the battle 'tween the land the sea,
That never shall my enemies vanquish me.

Poems

When I am faced with troubled times
And there are hurdles I must leap,
I seek some comfort in my rhymes
And there I find a place to keep
My earnest thoughts that, carved in stone,
Can ease my often troubled mind
When midnight strikes and I'm alone
Amongst my poems which I designed
To chase away the winter chill
And guide me through each hurricane
With words that forge my iron will
With spirit that I can't explain.

Oh fighting words, oh battle cry!
Without you I would surely die.
You are the valiant flag I raise
When I must face my darkest days.
You are my prayer, my bugle call -
And with you near, I shall not fall!

Death You Keep Reminding Me

Death you keep reminding me
That one day all will end.
In life there's not much certainty,
On death I can depend!

Each day is but on loan to me -
I've borrowed quite a few,
There's still so much I've yet to see
And things I want to do.

So I'll spend wisely each new day
And cherish every precious friend.
Then death's account I'll gladly pay
When life and love come to an end.

An Anger Wells Inside of Me

An anger wells inside of me
One that won't subside.
It isn't born of jealousy
Or pettiness or pride.
There is no weapon in my hand,
I haven't raised clenched fist.
Hark and you'll soon understand
This wrath that does persist.

I rage 'gainst ancient queen and king
Whose power and greed such woes did bring -
Who, in the name of God and state,
Launched their wars and spread their hate,
Who robbed their subjects with such ease
Then plundered foreign colonies.

The earth cries out!
The heavens shout!
Oh how unjust
Betrayal of trust.

Oh leaders of the holy church,
You turned the cross into a sword!
It's Christ's name that you did besmirch,
You burned and killed then praised the Lord!

Fascists of the modern age
To you the lion's share of rage.
A sea of blood stains Europe's soil
And so my blood will always boil.
And if there really is a hell,
I know its ranks must surely swell,
And in the fierce eternal flame
You'll find the beasts who are to blame
For all the blood and screams and tears -
The tyrants of five thousand years.

An anger wells inside of me
One that won't subside.
It's born of our dark history
And fueled by genocide.
I can't forget, I won't forgive,
This I swear long as I live.

JAZZ

Shimmering golden notes of jazz,
Joyful, playful, what pizazz,
In a smoke-filled, crowded room -
Happy music fights the gloom.
Waterfall of harmonies,
Sparkling liquid poured with ease,
Art in motion, colors blending,
Flowing freely, never ending.
Not one note is serious,
'Tis laughter that I hear.
Its power is mysterious
That does compel my ear.

Another Boy Becomes A Man

Another boy becomes a man
And sheds the smooth, soft skin of youth.
He stands full-fledged amongst his clan
And dons the cloak of his tribe's truth.

He learns to keep his tears concealed -
With sweet-song voice he must not speak.
And of his fears, his lips are sealed,
He'll kiss no more his mother's cheek.

Sure and safe with mind shut tight,
Now less inclined to grow and play,
The man whose soul once burned so bright
Is closer to his grave today.

At Last

My life and yours have crossed of late,
And as we have so much to share,
I thank the gentle hand of fate
Whose timely act chased 'way despair.

Long have I awaited you
Amidst the barren plains I roam,
Where friends would seldom grace my view
Or walk with me the long trek home.

But now with footprints next to mine,
You've nurtured me and warmed my heart.
At last I sip of friendship's wine,
And toast that we shall never part!

The Whale

I met a fellow traveler,
We briefly shared the road.
He told of things spectacular,
So now to him this ode.

All year long he sails the seas
Without a suitcase or a care,
And none exist whom he must please
And there is nought that he won't dare.
For he's a splendid whale full-grown,
Breaking bounds of length and girth,
Great ocean-king who needs no throne -
By nature crowned upon his birth.

And so when we met face to face,
Silent homage did I pay.
His countenance bore warmth and grace
And I admired his noble way.

Suddenly he spoke to me,
This distant cousin of the sea.
He knew of man and all we've done,
Our cities and science and victories won.

He told me many things that day
Of the universe beneath the sea,
And the hidden world where the great whales play,
And the twists and turns of their history.

The deep dark ocean is a hostile place
Far from the warmth and light of the sun,
And tears filled his eyes for the error of his race -
Their return to the sea cannot be undone.

When next I am pulled to the lapping shore
And contemplate the Earth's great seas,
I'll think, great whale, on you some more
And treasure your vast mysteries.

 Mountain

Six miles high above the ground

I watch as mountain peaks abound.

Monuments rise far below

By nature fashioned long ago.

Rough-hewn face of jagged rock,

Is it me you dare to mock?

I've been told that next to you,

My life span's a day or two.

While you've seen nations come and go.

Time for you must ooze so slow.

And though you seem to touch the sky

You can't reach where I can fly,

And we have punched huge holes through you

That cars and trucks and trains pass through.

Even in your fierce eruption

You cannot match our mass destruction

With missiles high above your head

With bombs that leave whole cities dead.

And yet, oh mountain, you endure -

Great symbol of the clean and pure.

You are the temple where I pray

To see me through a trying day.

And when my spirit's feeling low,

You are the rock to which I go.

The Time Will Come

The time will come when sea and sky

No longer scheme to please my eye,

When wind-blown cloud and breaking wave

Exhort me not to shout and rave,

When all that made my heart beat fast

Be gone - save in dreams of ages past.

The time will come when love's soft glow

Lies buried deep in graves below,

When death shall steal my friends away -

Memories, ghosts of yesterday,

When only fire can warm my bones,

When youth has fled - replaced by groans.

The time will come, but not just yet.

The living ought not, of death, to fret!

So till the hour of setting sun,

Fiercely will I live and play,

And all I wished for shall be won.

The time will come - this dog shall have his day.

The Eternal Freedom Fighter

I am the eternal freedom fighter.

I battle on the barricade of liberty.

No gender nor race nor age have I –

I have no nationality.

I was here before they built the pyramids.

I appeared when tyranny began.

I've marched with the greatest leaders ever known –

I fought alongside champions of man.

I was there with Washington

With his troops at Valley Forge ;

A newly founded nation won

Its freedom from King George.

I marched in the Civil War

To put an end to slavery

Rode a freedom bus

In the next century.

I exist in every generation.

I outlive the Fascist that I fight.

Thousands of comrades flock to me –

Brave people doing what is right.

I have written words of revolution.

I have written many protest songs.

I prefer the peaceful way but if I must,

I will use a gun to right the wrongs.

I've seen many comrades fall

When they've answered freedom's call.

I have seen a thousand deaths

And yet I still stand tall.

Tyrants, bigots, evil men –

Hark, for I shall rise again.

I will fight eternally

In the name of liberty.

Mystery

The tired day prepares to sleep –

A lazy bird flies here and there.

The fading sunlight will not keep –

Both day and night one sky must share

In twilight's magic mix of hue,

Soft clouds await the sun's demise –

A slow retreat of pink and blue

Till darkness vanquishes the skies.

As tides pay homage to the moon,

And warm winds blow across the bay,

Then in my arms will my love swoon,

Beholding nature's grand display.

With heaven as our canopy

There shall appear a mystery

Far greater than the sky above –

Two souls enjoined by the power of love.

A View of Heaven

Is this the last poem I shall write

Before my mind's eye loses sight?

Then I must carve it into stone

That shall above me stand alone

To testify that I breathed air

And tasted love and knew despair.

Will death soon come to silence me

To snuff my soul eternally?

Then I will freeze in time these lines

While my setting sun still shines.

Life's bought with burnt offerings --

And sacrifice of carefree days.

To grasp great thoughts and do great things

I paid a price – but life repays!

Of all the riches life bestows

Naught compares with giving birth

To an idea that grow and grows

And takes me high above the Earth

To see the wonders that are found

Miles above safe solid ground

Where truth and beauty wait for those

Whose souls command them to compose.

That is where I wish to die -

Where Earthly shackles fall apart

And stars command brave men to try

With every ounce of strength and heart

To do what most say can't be done

Armed with vision, fueled by love

Fighting till the battle's won

Soaring o'er the clouds above

Till the quest for art pays dividends

And the means of toil yield fruitful ends.

Are these words my parting lines

Ne'er again that place to see?

Then high on the mountain 'tween oaks and pines

With a view of heaven, pray bury me.

Quebec

Mighty walls along the waters

Sloping city of glories past,

Legacy of French sons and daughters,

Dreams of empire that didn't last.

Harbor master, gatekeeper, mighty portal!

So warm under white wintry blanket so cold!

What spirit renders thee immortal?

Ancient - though you don't grow old!

Frosted glass and smooth carved stone,

Defiant fortress aloof, alone.

Smoke-topped dwellings - winding street

Flowing seaway at your feet.

Weathered statue smooth to my hand,

How tall and proud, how strong you stand.

Silent witness - I'd lend both ears

To hear the wisdom of a hundred years.

From Where Springs Your Pride?

Unafraid because you're unaware of the threat?

Do you mock death because you haven't seen it yet?

Defy you the foe from safe castle wall?

Climb only when the net catches your fall?

Are you the confident master of routine,

Smiling 'cause your world hasn't been cold and mean?

Untested, untried?

From where springs your pride?

If from good looks or youth,

Then heed well this truth:

To see the threat,

Yet to double your bet,

To stare death in the face

And remain in the race,

Fighting your foe in his domain,

Scaling the cliff though they call you insane!

To shun routine and master the new,

To bravely smile when they've made fun of you,

To sing your battle cry out loud

Thereby earning the right to be proud!

Speedy Ship that Sails the Sky

Speedy ship that sails the sky,

Wonder of the modern age,

What force enables you to fly

And spring me from my Earthly cage?

Bird with flesh and blood of steel

That lifts me o'er the tallest peak -

Descendant of the ancient wheel,

How I wish that you could speak.

For I can't see beyond the hills -

My vision's blurred by human ills.

How easy, though, it is for you

To see that which eludes my view.

From five miles high above the land,

The city skylines must look grand.

You're spared the sight of slums and crime -

And evil lurks not where you climb!

Speedy ship that sails the sky,

You've fortified my view of things.

We'll dwarf the feats of times gone by

With miracles the future brings.

The Nectar of a God

"Son of Zeus, oh bursting sunshine,

Beckoning beauty, make me thine.

Add me to your splendid palate, painter of the sea and sky –

Lest the ocean waves abscond and all the planets die.

Eyes that summon all they see,

Find your target – capture me.

Fire-breather, make me burn –

Ignite my soul with Earthly passion,

Though 'tis Heaven for which I yearn –

And thou, a god, might this love fashion."

The music of this star-born soul

Rich in celestial harmony

In its magical seductive role,

A honey-dipped lusty symphony,

Pulled me to my life-long bliss,

Signed and sealed in our first kiss.
