Trips in the Planning Stage
- South Florida Kayak Camping - Ten Thousand Islands (Everglades NP), Flamingo (Everglades NP), Biscayne
Bay NP, Long Key, and Little St. George Island (Big Bend area of Florida Panhandle). Trying to put together a series
of 3-4 day kayak camping trips that cover many of the places where I day paddled on my last Florida trip. About a 3 week trip
total. Planned for February 2004
- Western Lakes - Yellowstone Lake and Lewis/Shoshone Lake (Yellowstone NP), Lake Jackson (Grand Teton
NP), and Flaming Gorge Reservoir (Green River). Some kayak camping and some day trips. Maybe a few day trips in
some of the Colorado mountain lakes. Aug/Sept 2006
- Northern California - Crescent City, Klamath River Delta, Humbolt Lagoons, Silkyone Wilderness, Mendocino
coast, and of course Monterrey Bay. Hopefully a stop in McKinleyville to visit with Dick Wold and try out a couple of
his surf kayaks. Aug/Sept 2005
- Maine - Acadia National Park and the Maine Kayak Trail. Not much details on this one yet.
- Veracruz - Winter trip down to Mexican Gulf Coast. Also not many details on this trip yet.
Trips I Dream About But Probably Will Never Take
- Kenai Fiords NP/Prince Willaim Sound (Alaska)
- Glacier Bay/Admiralty Island (Alaska)
- Vancover Island (British Columbia, Canada) - Hopefully a chance to paddle with Doug Lloyd
- United Kingdom and Ireland - Hopefully a chance for some training at the Anglesy Sea Kayaking Center in Wales
Some Goals I Hope to Accomplish
- Paddle around Corpus Christi Bay in one day. Its about a 40 Nm tirp. Once I did a little over half of the
trip in about 10 hrs. 20+ mph headwinds for the last couple of hours nearly did me in.
- Paddle the entire Texas coast - I originally wanted to do it in one continuous trip, but now I just want to paddle all
the various sections at least once.
- Paddle 2000 Nm miles in a year. I am going to make 1000 Nm in 2003.
- Get my BCU 3 Star certification
Some Skills I Want to Master
- An off-side sculling brace - On the on-side I can lay in the water for several minutes, but I lose it after a few
sculls on the off-side. Update: As of summer 2004 I am doing sculling braces on both sides.
Still need some work but reliable enough to use for cooling off on hot days.
- A Greenland Storm Roll - The roll where you come up leaning forward with your palms facing down (ie in a low brace
position).
- A true bottom turn - A surfing manuver where you come straight down the wave and then turn back more parallel to it catch
a long ride I really want to learn linked cutbacks, but I think I'll have to get a surf kayak before I can master that.
- A re-entry and roll.
- A half-paddle roll - Capsize, remove half of spare paddle from storage, and roll back up.
- The hand roll - The Holy Grail of my rolling quests.
