The Ranch

Where I live....

May 2003

I bought this place in March 2002 and moved here a year later, when I retired from 20+ years of data processing in the corporate world.

The trees are mostly oak, with a few conifers

View from the house, to the west....
It only snowed once last winter
The elevation is 1500 feet

This part of California is a grower's dream
Cold enough to grow cherries and blueberries
Hot enough to grow citrus
Soon after I harvest the pears and quince, the oranges are ripening.
The leaves on the peach tree on the right are turning yellow and gold.
The previous owner kept horses and exercised them in a circle
Now the lupines take the field in the spring

I dug up some old grapevines which had been neglected for years,
pruned and staked them last spring.
Turned out to be sweet table grapes similar to Concord but smaller.
Possibly a California native grape.
I harvested buckets of grapes in September
Some we ate, some we juiced, some a friend made into wine...
Hail on the pond, in May

Ten heirloom apple trees...

Ashmead's Kernel, Calville Blanc, Cox's Orange Pippin,
Gravenstein, Spitzenburg, Pink Pearl,
Granny Smith, Empire, Pink Lady, Tremblett's Bitter
