Paria Canyon

In September 2005 I hiked with a small Sierra Club group through Paria Canyon in southern Utah and northern Arizona.
With side trips we covered about 50 miles in 7 days, finishing up at Lee's Ferry on the Colorado River.

An arch formed by an enormous monolith of rock falling into the canyon.

My campsite the first night, on a ledge above the river.

The river was low which meant we slogged through mud most of the time.

The first couple of days the canyon was narrow and the walls high...
which kept us cool during the hot days.

We saw lots of petroglyphs carved into the desert varnish.

A typical view as the canyon opened up.
