WHIRLWIND CABLE TESTER

By Mark Farmer

Traveling from show to show city to city tools become a highly valuable item. Most toolboxes include such things as a soldering iron, cable adapters, varied tools and some type of electronic meter. But, what if you could add a special tool to prevent from reaching for those test leads and meter.
Well, the Whirlwind Cable Tester is just that tool. The black box revels the size of small passive direct box. It contains capability to test 1/4”, XLR, and RCA phono connectors. All of the jacks running down the left side with exception of the phono jacks. There is a in and out for each connector. A rocker switch turns the unit on and off. A red LED shows the box is on or off. Four LED lights each represent a corresponding wiring type, per each connector.
The top green LED triples as pin 1 XLR , shield 1/4”, and the phono ground. The second green LED triples as pin 2 XLR, 1/4” ring and RCA positive. A third red LED states phase reverse or pin 2 hot for 1/4” or XLR cables. Fourth down another green LED checks pin XLR, 1/4” tip and denotes pin 3 hot or not. Power for the tester is provided by a 9 volt battery. Included, something I found handy was the heavy duty belt clip mounted on the back.
Some hums and buzzes at had during setup the tester came in super handy at numerous shows. Priced around $75.00 retail it is a great piece to hang on your belt loop next to your MAG light and multi-plier. I would highly recommend you to purchase one of these for every toolbox.
