French served with a horse artillery battalion during the Mexican War and saw action in several engagements. Pages 140-302 are devoted to the Civil War at the outset of which French was commissioned as a brigadier-general in the Confederate army. During the first couple of years he was assigned to supervise the coastal defense of North Carolina, culminating with his appointment on July 17, 1862 as Commander of the Department of North Carolina and Southern Virginia. In the summer of 1863 French was transferred to the western theater, where he served under J.E. Johnston and later John Bell Hood.
