Confederate Veteran, 1901. 1st ed. 404p. Maps. Illus. Decorated
light blue cloth. USMA class of 1843. French served with a horse
artillery battalion during the Mexican War and saw action in
several engagements. Pages 140-302 are devoted to the Civil War
at the outset of which French was commissioned as a brigadier-general
in the Confederate army. During the first couple of years he
was assigned to supervise the coastal defense of North Carolina,
culminating with his appointment on July 17, 1862 as Commander
of the Department of North Carolina and Southern Virginia. In
the summer of 1863 French was transferred to the western theater,
where he served under J.E. Johnston and later John Bell Hood.
He describes engagements in which he participated and provides
reports for others for which he was not present. While the narrative
focuses on military matters it is also of some interest as a
travelogue. Ex. Lib. Text block tight but separated from covers.
