Milford Eagles Girls’ Volleyball Philosophy
Coach Walters’ Coaching Philosophy
To teach volleyball in a positive, technical, and gamelike manner. To equip student-athletes to become responsible citizens
with good work ethics and high moral character in order to be able to accomplish their purpose in life.
Eagles Team Philosophy
Be a successful student athlete. Players need to strive to be scholar-athletes.
Commitment. Be committed to your team and teammates.
Communication is a must both on and off the court. Communication is vital between the coach and player. All players are
important to the success of practice, matches, and the overall program.
Being early is being on time; being on time is being late. This makes practices, meetings, and departures begin promptly.
Set measurable goals.
Self-coach. When a coach asks a player to try a skill in a different way, the player has to keep trying to change, or self-coach.
Being coachable promotes faster learning.
Have fun but play hard. Play hard but play smart. This is instilled during warm-up games, drills, and matches.
Your feet play the ball - efficient movement is a must. Natural athletes find this easy. Others must work to develop good
feet.
Always know the score but play like your team is behind - every point counts. Play that first point the same way you play
that last point in a game.
Play to the whistle. Referees make mistakes.
Everyone helps. No one leaves until everything is picked up.
Be thankful. Hitters thank the setter; the setter thanks the passer. Don’t be obnoxious but remember that the hitters
shouldn’t get all the credit. Also, thank the match hosts, the support staff, the fans, and so on. This goes a long
way.
Celebrate a great play but don’t dwell on it - refocus. Forget the bad play - learn from it and refocus.
Be responsible for your actions. Don’t blame others for your poor actions.
Respect your machine. Take care of your body and feed it healthy. Get enough sleep. Stay fit and abide by training rules.
Repetition develops good habits. Repetition is boring but players need to repeat skills properly so they can react in a
game without thinking.
Follow the rules of the school and team and maintain your values. Know how to weigh the consequences. If you think you
will get in trouble for the action, have the maturity to say no.
