Somna

[rev. Sept. 8, 2013]

The plague burns on and on
It's pitiless, it's vivid in the sky (in the sky)
The sun glows out and on
It's merciless, even when you're up this high (in the sky)

(And, and, and, and, and, and, and, and)
And you really think you've got my number

Just don't forget
I know who you are
I know what you want
Maybe just a little somna

A woman has lived in my head, these past thirty years
Talks in a voice no one can hear (in the sky)
With her shoulders of fortune, and her waist of time
Soothe your body, change your mind
You've got to leave that world behind

(And, and, and, and, and, and, and, and)
And you really think you've got my number

Just don't forget
I know who you are
I know what you want
Maybe just a little somna

(In the sky)

Just don't forget
Just don't forget (in the sky)

Just don't forget
I know who you are
I know what you want
Maybe just a little somna

Just don't forget
I know who you are
I know what you want
Maybe just a little somna (in the sky)

Just don't forget
I know who you are
I know what you want
Maybe just a little somna (in the sky)

Ate up the prophets
Corrupted the saints
Exhausted resources
Made us ashamed

Hollywood
Won't touch you with a pole
Jesus does not love you
Lucifer does not want your soul

Made a mistake
No one will forgive you
Servants you love to dismiss
All will outlive you

Set us against each other
Thought it was clever
What a fiasco
Well I never

Won't touch you with a pole
Jesus does not love you

Fall In Love

[rev. Sept. 8, 2013]

I knew this man, he had some kind of fatal affliction.
Each day, a tiny particle, a small drop of his soul, leaked or escaped into the air,
out beyond the insipid gray sky and into dead space.
The paranormal specialist could find no way to plug the tiny perforations
which dripped his spirit behind him as he went on down the highway.

Fall in love with me (oo-oo-oo-ooh)
Fall in love with me (It's not impossible)
Fall in love with me (oo-oo-oo-ooh)
Fall in love with me (It's not impossible)

It was attributed to hashish and opium addiction, excessive womanizing,
lashings of money and flattery, and a charmed, but not charming life.
Who can describe the agony of this gradual soul depletion?
Too cowardly to take his own life, he roamed the cafés and cabarets
searching out other wretches who shared his most hideous malady.
And they spent their days in sophistry and idle banter,
as their essence oozed, and the void moved ever closer.

Fall in love with me (oo-oo-oo-ooh)
Fall in love with me (It's not impossible)
Fall in love with me (oo-oo-oo-ooh)
Fall in love with me (It's not impossible)

Fred, the man, charlatan bastard, poor piteous doomed puppet,
immersed himself in these vices, but this only exacerbated his demise more rapidly.
Eventually he could derive pleasure from nothing,
the most lurid pornography or the most holy scriptures
failed to arouse him from his stupor, his boredom.
Great cities, or the endless beautiful plains stretched out before his jaded gaze,
and disappeared into the nothingness of his feeling.

Fall in love with me (oo-oo-oo-ooh)
Fall in love with me (It's not impossible)
Fall in love with me (oo-oo-oo-ooh)
Fall in love with me (It's not impossible)

Fall in love with me (oo-oo-oo-ooh)
Fall in love with me (It's not impossible)
Fall in love with me (oo-oo-oo-ooh)
Fall in love with me (It's not impossible)

Fall in love with me (oo-oo-oo-ooh)
Fall in love with me (It's not impossible)
Fall in love with me...

Space

[rev. Sept. 5, 2015]

If you're not a commodity, why are you so scarce
Invisible even in your solar flares
I battled your intensity
You really got propensity
To burn, to burn

Stumbling 'round the moonscape
With the gravity of a feather
I know that it's a calamity
We just talk of the weather
The silver of your sun suit
Negates the execute
I want to escape (ahhh), I want to escape (ahhh)
Your pull (ahhh), your pull (yeah)

Struggling against the current
Spat at by the torrent
Grabbing at little silver fishes
Dream fabrique is wishes, washes
A hundred leagues under the lake
A town down there and then I'll wake
Don't change, don't change

Wonder (to burn), it's no wonder (to burn)
Wonder (to burn), it's no wonder (to burn)

Don't tell me now it's over (to burn)
Over in an instant, instantly over (to burn)
Atoms, starlings, missiles, batteries (to burn)
Cotton, infants, fishes, wishing (to burn)
Breathing, whispers, breakthrough, wicked
Nonsense, dirges, princes, fathers (to burn)
Moonlight, flattery, rainbow, orbit
Falling, midnight, crashing, tackle (to burn)
Freezing, glowing, cinders, forces
Power, sticky, setback, arching (to burn)
Outward, naked, narrow, willing
Storming, killing, spinning, happen to me (to burn)
Birthday, kissing, forming, shaking
Bottle, hammer, reefer, Buddha (to burn)
Mantra, shudder, city
Only water they're after (to burn)
Then they're after
Someone eating out
Till they got you
Almost present...

The Egyptian

[rev. Sept. 8, 2013]

Pinocchio he loves her
Like anybody wood
But if she pulls his strings again tonight
I'm leaving her for good

In Alexandria
I know a place we can go
They serve amnesia
You better blow if you wanna catch the show

The crooked fox, he worships her
Cut off an infidel's finger
Just to steal the wedding ring
And give it to the singer

In Alexandria
I know a place we can go
They serve amnesia
You better blow if you wanna catch the show

Mustafa junior wants her, too
He wants her for his slave
Her face behind the veil
Her spirit in a cage

In Alexandria
I know a place we can go
They serve amnesia
You better blow if you wanna catch the show

In Alexandria
In Alexandria

Midnite In America

[rev. Sept. 8, 2013]

Broken old record, what did you find?
The honey is spiked, I thought you liked it
Make up your mind
Fools took the boy, boy did they throw him
Into the lake
He wades through the weeds, comes to the party
What a mistake

And now, now he's waiting for a miracle, yeah
But how, when its midnite in America now

Stupid magician, with your cloak and your wand
Pulls out a rabbit, he's got a bad habit
He's quite overfond
The woman took the man, and man did she drop him
Onto the floor
He crawls to the exit, he sings like a swallow
He knocks at her door

And now, now he's waiting for a miracle, yeah
How, when its midnite in America now

Mixed up and empty, probably dead
The company paid it, the aliens laid it
Down on his head
The boyfriend hit a kid, I kid you not
He hurt him real bad
He lay in the garden, he bled on the flowers
It's awfully sad

But now, now he's waiting for a miracle, yeah
How, when its midnite in America now
How, now he's waiting for a miracle now
How, when its midnite in America now

Linda Wong

In a room in Hong Kong
Out of a Cantonese song
I met Miss Linda Wong
She was looking for me
She led me to her bedroom
Wonderful things she said
Too much for my head
Like I'm all at sea

Her bones shined through her skin
Her eyes were green and pinned
She floated in the wind
The wind from the sea
Her arms were thin and scarred
Her face was young and hard
But her mind was a garden
Open for me

If I stay here too much longer
Must have needed something stronger
I never would belong
Her world was not mine
Together we'd float and drift
On what we smoked and sniffed
Press a button on the lift
For Cloud 9

Her bones shined through her skin
her eyes were green and pinned
She floated in the wind
The wind from the sea
Her pale Chinese cheeks
Ain't seen the sun for weeks
That ain't the life she seeks
Looking for me

English Kiss

[rev. Sept. 8, 2013]

Do you remember the story
In the bloody chamber
About the mad tiger
He licks the skin off of women
I tell you Samantha
I could wear those straps for you

Have you prayed, have you chanted
With the symbols and incense
To both Krishna and Buddha
And the Goddess of Fortune
For an Indian lover
To wake Kundalini
Your beautiful Gyani
But also Iscariot
Who comes to betray us
With just one English Kiss

Deep in the autumn
I lie in my bedroom
Just one more long shadow
Fall into the corners
I reach for a woman
Who harbors in darkness
She lands on a mountain
That sways for a moment
Crashes in pieces all over my eyes
All over my eyes

And when you get tired
Of fake little evenings
Slip through your fingers
And don't keep their promise
Oh it's such a sad vision
It breaks up my daydream
It's such a sad vision, breaks up my daydream

Look up that sleeve, where is the rabbit
Already secreted along with the dove
Where is the passion, already depleted
Just like the love

Can you imagine what I can manage
With your permission, with your consent
I know what you're thinking
Hear what you're saying, how could I ever
I know what you like (yeah)
I think I know what you like
I'm sure I know what you like

You should give it attention
You should give it attention
You should give it some thought
You should give me a night
You should give me a night
I know what you like

Double Exposure

[rev. Sept. 8, 2013]

You show me all the many things that you promised
But not many did I need to see
You filled my head with your elusive premise
And your immensity
You took me places, introduced me to people
None had a love in tow
You sang and you rang and you burst and you stand
Until I was unstrung

(Ahh) Oh, it was the usual circus (ahh) burning like rain
(Ahh) Oh, it was an awful mistake, let's make it again

You gave me a list of all the things I had missed
Nothing on it that I never tried
You got in the pulpit and unleashed your gambit
Which left me dazzled, ??? [1:38] and fried
You thanked me profusely for falling so loosely
You said nothing like a small, wee drop
You entered my bloodstream and ate up my daydreams
And filed me under rock and pop

(Ahh) Oh it was all such a shambles (ahh) dripping like fire
(Ahh) Oh it was a moment of truth surrounded by lies

You trumped up a charge which loomed up real large
And barged down the door when they charged me some more
You jumbled the code and gambled the load
Then you followed the road to the shore
You sold me a ticket, I just couldn't hack it
There's no place really that I've ever been
You looped and surveyed with the money I paid
Going on red, stopping on green

(Ahh) Oh it was a lovely fiasco (ahh) boiling like ice
(Ahh) Oh it was a double exposure so don't think twice

(Oh it was a double exposure) (a double exposure)

Over

[rev. May 6, 2006]

Over the earth
Over the sea
Over you
Over me
Over the night
That died in my hands
Over all of this
All that expanse
Over the moon
Over the ice
Over the truth
Over the lies
Over the magic
Blew up in my face
Over all the time
And all over the place
Over the mountains
Over the storms
Over the children
Their sleeping forms
Over the smack
It smacked me right down
Over the doctors (over the hills and far away, over)
Over the clowns
Over the rainbow (over the hills and far away, over)
Over the clouds
Over the greedy (over the hills and far away, over)
Over the proud
Over the elements (over the hills and far away, over)
That make up my mind
Over the fall (over the hills and far away)
Over ??? [3:28]

Night In Hell

[Steve reading Professor Wallace Fowlie's translation (from "Rimbaud: Complete Works, Selected Letters," 1966, The University of Chicago Press) of "Night In Hell" by Arthur Rimbaud, from A Season In Hell]

[rev. July 13, 2009]

I swallowed a monstrous mouthful of poison.—Thrice blessed be the idea that came to me!—My entrails are burning. The poison's violence twists my limbs, deforms me and hurls me to the ground. I am dying of thirst and choking. I can't cry out. It is hell, an eternal punishment! See how the fire rises up again! I am burning as I should. Come on, demon!

I'd caught a glimpse of my conversion to the good and to happiness, salvation. How can I describe the vision? The air of hell does not permit hymns! There were millions of charming creatures, a sweet spiritual concert strength and peace, noble ambitions, how can I know what?

Noble ambitions!

And this is still life!—And damnation is eternal! A man who tries to mutilate himself is surely damned, isn't he? I think I am in hell, and therefore I am. It is the result of the catechism. I am a slave to my baptism. Parents, you have caused my misfortune and your own. Poor innocent!—Hell has no power over pagans.—This is still life! Later, the delights of damnation will be all the greater. A crime, quick, so I can drop into the void in accordance with the law of man.

Be quiet! Will you be quiet! ... Here, there is shame and reprobation. Satan says the fire is contemptible and my anger totally ridiculous.—Enough! ... They are whispering errors to me, magic, strange perfumes, childish melodies.—And to think that I have truth, that I see justice. My judgement is sound and certain, I am ready for perfection ... Pride.—My scalp is drying up. Pity! Lord, I am afraid. I am thirsty, so thirsty! Ah! childhood, grass, rain, lake water on the pebbles, moonlight when the bell tower rang twelve ... The devil is in the tower at this moment. Mary! Holy Virgin! ... —The horror of my stupidity.

Back there, are they not good souls who wish me well? ... Come ... A pillow is over my mouth. They cannot hear me, they are ghosts. Besides, no one ever thinks of anyone else. Let no one come near. I'm certain that I smell scorched.

There are countless hallucinations. In truth, it is what I've always had: no faith in history and the forgetting of principles. I will not speak of this: poets and visionaries would be jealous. I am the richest a thousand times over. Let me be as avaricious as the ocean.

Why! the clock of life stopped just now, and I'm no longer in the world.—Theology is serious, hell is certainly down below—and Heaven up above.—Ecstasy, nightmare, sleep in a nest of flames.

Oh! the malice in attentiveness to the country ... Satan, Old Nick, runs about with the wild grain ... Jesus is walking over the scarlet brambles without bending them down ... Once Jesus walked on the troubled waters. The lantern showed him to us, standing and pale, with long dark hair, beside an emerald wave ...

I intend to unveil all mysteries: religious mysteries or those of nature, death, birth, the future, the past, cosmogony, the void. I am a master of hallucinations.

Listen! ...

I possess every talent!—There is no one here, and there is someone. I would not like to expend my treasure.—Do you want primitive songs or houri dances? Do you want me to disappear and dive after the ring? Do you? I will make gold and remedies.

Then trust in me. Faith relieves and guides and cures. Come all,—even the little children.—I will comfort you, and pour out my heart for you—my marvelous heart!—Poor men, workers! I am not asking for prayers. With your trust alone, I will be happy.

—Just think of me. This hardly makes me miss the world. I am lucky enough not to suffer any more. My life was only sweet madness, and that is too bad.

Bah! Let's make all possible faces.

Decidedly, we are out of this world. No more sound. My touch has gone. Ah! my castle, my Saxony, my willow grove. The evenings, the mornings, the nights, days. How tired I am!

I should have my hell for anger, for pride,—and the hell of caresses; a concert of hells.

I am dying of weariness. It is the tomb, I am going to the worms, horror of horrors! Satan, joker, you are trying to dissolve me with your charms. I object. I object! Give me a poke with your pitchfork! A drop of fire.

Ah! if I could rise again into life! and cast my eyes on our deformities. And that poison, that kiss damned a hundred times. My weakness, the world's cruelty. Pity, God, hide me, I misbehave!—I am hidden and I am not hidden.

The fire rises up again with its damned.
