Roman Milecastle

Unknown manufacturer

Resin Milecastle

I won this castle in a raffle drawing a year or so ago. It was batched together with something I wanted, so was kind of a bonus! It seemed like it would be a good size for my Dark Age skirmish, and had a resemblance to illustrations I'd seen of Roman milecastles on Hadrian's Wall in northern Britain. So, I promised myself I would paint it one day.

Although time consuming, it was easy to do. I spray primed it black, then followed that up brushing on black acrylic. After it dried overnight, I drybrushed (on successive days) dark gray, then light gray, then khaki highlights. The exposed brick sections were done in a red brown drybrush with khaki highlights. I finished it off with my standard black wash.

Of course, it is a big piece, and joins my Pictish broch in being over sized and hard to store!
