This was one of my major purchases at Cold Wars 2009. I'd brought some stuff to sell at the flea market, and it went like hotcakes. So, I had a bit more cash than I was planning towards the end of the convention. I figured that I could use some actual Celtic style buildings for my Dark Age skirmishes, so browsed Acheson Creations' booth. I almost bought the elaborate, hut out on the water, that is a Celtic crannog. However, I figured I would get more general use out of these. A crannog would be useful pretty much only in scenarios designed around them.
Having painted Acheson's resin models before, I made sure I soaked the model in detergent overnight, and scrubbed it good. If you don't, the paint will bead up on the resin pretty badly. I spray primed it black, following that up with an acrylic black brush primer. After that, it was relatively simple to do. I dry brushed it medium brown first, then khaki to bring out the wood grain highlights. The interior was done in dark gray with light gray and then khaki dry brush coats. The steep, peaked thatched roof comes off, of course -- like most of Acheson's great stuff. I gave it a base dull yellow dry brush over the black, then another khaki dry brush to "tone it down." The entire model received my normal blask wash, which finishes off the thatch roofing perfectly.
I decided to get fancy and put tiny earth magnets on two of the wooden posts and metal bases on the roof. This should keep the relatively heavy roof on during play, coming off only when I want to move figures around inside or in and out of the building. Definitely a nice model that paints up well!
