Palmyran DBA Camp

Palmyran DBA Camp

Awhile back, fellow DBA enthusiast John Loy and I went together on an Old Glory order for Palmyrans. When it was time for me to pay for my portion, I asked him how much I owed, and he responded, "Make me a camp for my Palmyrans and we'll call it even!" Money always seeming to be a little tight, I couldn't quite turn the offer down. Now, more than a year later (BUT, they beat the army in being painted, right John?), I finally got around to honoring my part of the bargain.

I decided to go with a stretch of city wall for this camp. I went back through my photos of Palmyra (yes, I'm very lucky, and have been there!) to match the color with the local stone onsite. The front of the walled section is from JR Miniatures. The angled portions edging back towards the back of the base were scratch built with foam core board. I held the foamcore up to the resin portion and scored the foamcore with a ballpoint pen, match the grooves in the stone up. Later, I read that a way to get deeper mortaring betwen the stones is to score the foamcore with an X-acto knife first, THEN make your grooves with the ballpoint pen. I think it still turned out nicely, though. I matched the wooden planking atop the wall with craft sticks.

The guards are Old Glory -- the more "Roman" looking officer from their Roman artillery pack, while the two spearmen (whose paint jobs unfortunately don't show up in this pic but which I'm particularly proud of) are from their Arab spearmen pack. I painted the guards in reverse colors, according to the sources I'd read. The guards are a light green with maroon trim, while the officer is maroon with green trim.

The road is simply the tiny Woodland Scenics "ballast" type stones. I think this camp turned out well, and could even be used in a pinch as a Built Up Area for those heretics of the DBA community who actually use the atrocities...!
