I decided to do an oasis camp, defended by a thorn barrier with gate. The palm trees for the oasis were from a bag of 20 that I purchased from Pastimes on the Square at Advance the Colors 2006. They're the basic plastic "cake decorations" that I essentially repaint. I put a dark brown over the trunk and drybrush it khaki. The fronds I paint a medium green, then drybrush a paler green over top. This improves the look of them significantly.
For the thorn barrier, I epoxied a strip of thick craft foam to the camp's styrene plastic base. Then I cut up branches from a lead Woodland Scenics tree box that I've had for a decade or so. These were epoxied into the craft foam at various angles to provide the thorns, and incidently, a frame to hold the lichen that I would glue in as the vegetation. However, I did all flocking of the base first, so that the snipped up bits of lichen were the last thing I added to the camp.
The spear armed gate guard is from Old Glory, while the two Berber looking camp followers are from Navigator 15mm. The line of goats is -- I believe -- from a Falcon UK that I'd been looking for a way to use for years. They are molded as one piece in a long, somewhat two dimensional line. Here, they looked perfect streaming through the gate which is being pulled open by one of the Berbers. This is a camp with lots of elements to it, but I don't think it turned out too "busy." Plus, it has the benefit of being generic enough that you could use it for a number of armies.
This camp was a commission and was sold to my friend Nick Gillispie (of the Kanawha Riflemen in Charleston, WV) for $40.
