Our local group is on
a bit of "fantasy kick," right now, using Hordes of the Things
miniatures rules. These are basically the fantasy equivalent of De Bellis
Antiquitatis, our Ancients rules of choice. So, mechanics and troop types
are extremely familiar, keeping us from having to learn a whole new set
of rules. As a matter of fact, many people use their Ancients armies as
a base to build a HOTT army from. For example, if you've got a Greek army,
simply toss in some centaurs, harpies, cyclops, gorgon, Olympian god --
you name it -- and you've got a HOTT army. This is the primary reason our
local group plays HOTT in 15mm, rather than 25mm, which is just as popular
elsewhere.
It is also the opinion of many that the Hordes of the Things, 2nd Edition rules are written much more clearly than DBA rules. There are diagrams illustrating points mentioned in the rules and even if a definition of terms. Like DBA, though, HOTT is equally easy to learn and is a fast-playing set of rules. Games typically last an hour or so.
The Great Lakes Area DBA Gamers (GLADBAG) runs a number of HOTT tournaments in the area, including ones at Warband and Warparty in the Cincinnati area, Origins in Columbus, and more. We always have loaner armies available, so why not show up to one of our events and give HOTT a try? We think you'll be hooked, like us...
