A Concert for John Kerry and Friends (Including me!)
A Concert for John Kerry and Friends (Including me!)
So my day yesterday went something like this: I woke up late, rushed out the door and went to the 1:05 Angels v. Oakland baseball game. After the start of the second inning my brother's cell phone starts ringing, as I look over my brother face goes from a pale slight grimace to a beaming smile. A few "um's," "ah's," and "O.K.'s" later he gets off the phone. The rest of the Angels game would have to be abandoned as we were both called up to the big leagues of politics. My ticket for the Angel game was only fourteen dollars; the ticket I got for last nights John Kerry fundraiser was a thousand dollars. At this point I did what any person would do, I gave up on the Angel game (leaving in the sixth inning when Shields gives up a home run to Oakland), rushed home, showered, grabbed my all purpose suit (because it's my only one), threw it on, and fought traffic all the way to Los Angeles. It was at this point I realized I walked into what seemed like a scene from the West Wing, John Kerry's motorcade rushed down the streets of Los Angeles with the Secret Service in tow and a phalanx of California Highway Patrol Officers shutting down busy L.A. streets. At the Walt Disney Concert Hall the Secret Service had both their "suits" and the uniform divisions working the metal detectors. Celebrities were everywhere, Rob Reiner, Leonardo DiCaprio, Ben Stiller, Meg Ryan, Neil Diamond, Willie Nelson, and Billy Crystal, just to name a few who were in attendance. There is nothing quite like hearing a rendition of "On the Road Again" live! With donors paying as much as 25,000 dollars for some seats, the Democratic Party was gracious enough to provide free drinks. The moment we all walked through the door we immediately gravitated to the bar. Trust me, if you have to sit through three songs of Barbara Streisand you need to be liquored up! The biggest highlight of the night was John Kerry's impromptu and off the cuff speech in front of the audience. At the middle of the speech, Kerry immediately grabbed my attention when he called for a complete separation of church and State, this is a topic which I have been involved in and to hear a presidential candied raise the issue in an election year immediately made me want to work harder to get Kerry into the White House.
