In no man's land,- the coyote will wail all night.
Ehawee screamed.- She kicked & put up a desperate fight.
He hit her hard,- this brutal man from the world outside.
But as it stands, EHAWEE IS GONE.

    She is gone from the land of the buffalo,
    of the prairie dog and the antelope.
    She is gone from the life she had come to know
    in her all-too-few short years.

The desert moon- saw the things that he did to her.
Agave plants- could not begin to relieve- her hurt.
He tied her down- as her blood soaked the sandy earth.
But as it stands, EHAWEE IS GONE.

        In a legal quagmire, he got away then
        as he's done it before, as he'll do it again.
        In this legal quagmire, will there be no end
        to this worst of a woman's fears?

The sheriff says- his jurisdiction is not to blame.
The tribal cops- & their- courts aren't supposed to detain
somebody from- out-side their- own domain.
And on the stand, EHAWEE IS GONE.

        or some foreign, primitive place.
        What we're talking here are current conditions
        where- one in three women is raped.

are raped 2.5 times the national average,
with perpetrators often unprosecuted.
AI called on all appropriate authorities to take
"concrete steps to decrease sexual violence
& increase services for Indigenous women who are raped".
Ehawee is a Sioux name meaning "Laughing Maiden".
This song is based on a case related over National Public Radio
by the sister of a raped & murdered victim.
