CLOSE, BUT NO HORSESHOE
Copyright © 1998 - mickterry.com
Crawling out the bottom
of a pile of tangled flesh,
I collected my belongings
and slowly I got dressed.
With my shirt still half-unbuttoned,
I was stumbling out the door
when a tempting voice behind me
called me back for more.
But temptation's no more tempting
when you've had it to the gills,
and I didn't care to argue
if I'd really had my fill.
I just made it to the street
as fourteen squad cars circled in,
and they busted the establishment
known as "The Bed Of Sin".
CLOSE, BUT NO- HORSESHOE.
CLOSE, but not quite close enough to win.
CLOSE, BUT STILL NO HORSESHOE.
What's this thing that they call "luck"?
Will I ever get enough?
I was sitting in a café
musing 'bout my close escape,
with a life-less Spanish omelet
half-eaten on my plate.
Well, it seems I'm not the only one
unhappy with his meal,
when the man who sat behind me
starts to raising holy hell.
When I realized just who he was,
in haste I start to leave,
for a Mafia war's no picnic
I'd especially want to see.
As I stooped to tie my shoelace,
thirty bullets ripped the walls:
with Don Carmine dead beside me,
half a dozen killed in all.
CHORUS
Such a harrowing encounter
left me with some shattered nerves,
so I took a scenic pleasure cruise
to leave my fears astern.
After just two days of sunshine,
salty air and balmy skies,
I had had my fill of ocean,
hanging over the side.
Usually, Dramamine's worked wonders,
but this time it did no good,
for they took out my appendix
just before it could explode.
When the 'copter brought me stateside
and had settled to the ground,
then we heard my cruise ship disappeared
& still it's not been found.
CHORUS
I never win at poker,
shooting craps or twenty-one.
And when it comes to horses,
mine never even hears the gun.
The lottery defeats me
and I even lose at "Old Maid".
I'm what you'd call "unlucky";
I never get a break.
I bought property in 'Frisco:
had to move there for my health.
Got a bargain from some sucker
who just had no sense of wealth.
For a pittance, he let go this place
that should have cost a vault.
He said something 'bout the landscape,
but then, each home has its faults.
I invested my life's fortune
in that house along the hill,
but I got it at such savings
that it made it worth the bill.
On the first night that I stayed there,
I had stepped out for a stroll.
With my hand still on the handle,
my house fell into a hole.
