Replacing the Fuel Filter on a 1st Generation CR-V:

Tools Needed:

Difficulty Scale:  On a scale of 1 to 5 (5 being very difficult) this is a 2 as you will working with fuel.

Process:

With the assistance of my very special helper (shameless plug for my daughter), I began.

NOTE:  Write down your radio's preset channels and have your anti-theft code handy as this process will result in power loss to your radio.

1.) Disconnect the negative cable from your battery.

2.) Open the fuel door and remove the gas cap.

3.) Locate the fuel filter on the rear wall of the engine compartment.  Take care to note how it is positioned, especially the top, black retaining clip and holds the fuel line at the top.  You will have to install the new filter in the same relative position.

4.) With the 17mm box head wrench and the 19mm wrench, you will have to slowly loosen the banjo bolt on top of the fuel filter.  Turn the banjo bolt with the 17mm wrench while the 19mm wrench holds the fuel filter in place.  Put a shop rag over the wrenches to keep any fuel from spraying up.  I actually had to use a torque wrench/breaker bar to loosen the banjo bolt.  Loosen the bolt 1 whole turn.  This should relive any pressure in the fuel system.

5.) Place a shop rag underneath and around the fuel filter.

6.) Completely unscrew the banjo bolt and remove the washers.  Wrap the fuel line in a shop rag as some fuel will leak out (trust me on this one, it's a real pain if gas leaks all over your engine compartment).

7.) Using the 10mm socket, remove the bracket shown below (see red arrows).  I found it easier to loosen and remove the entire assembly, but your situation may vary.

8.) Using the 14mm wrench at the bottom fuel line (fuel feed line), and the 19mm wrench to support/secure the fuel filter, loosen the filter off of the bottom fuel line.  The is a good possibility that gas will leak out of the fuel filter and the bottom fuel line so make sure there are a several rags underneath the filter area and there are 2 rags handy to wrap the old fuel filter and the bottom fuel line.

9.) Clean the flared joints of the high pressure hoses before reconnecting them.

10.) Install the new filter in the reverse order and make sure you use new washers as per the diagram in step 7.  Make sure to use the following torque specifications:

11.)  I let the car sit for several hours in the sun with the hood up as I spilled a bit fuel and wanted it to evaporate.  However if you don't spill any fuel, skip this step,

12.) Don't forget to reconnect the battery and close the fuel door
