New crossmember tucks above the 2.5" exhaust. If the crossmember were lower than the pipe, it would be more likely to get caught on something I never intended to run over.

 

It bolts to Steel plates inside the car with 1/2" bolts, sandwiching the floor pan between the member and the plates. It is also a few pounds lighter than the old rectangular tube crossmember.
