The Hound of the Baskervilles (March 25, 1959)
Starring Cushing. Based on the often-filmed Sherlock Holmes novel by Arthur Conan Doyle, and likely planned as the first in a series of Holmes films from Hammer Studios. Frankly, Cushing has never been exactly my idea of Sherlock Holmes, either in appearance or manner, but this color remake (the first Sherlock in color, in fact) has its charm, though it lacks much compared to the 1939 Basil Rathbone version. Although Hammer never did make a sequel to the picture, Cushing did portray Sherlock Holmes many more times for television, including another remake of The Hound of the Baskervilles! Pictured here is the poster for the German release.

The Mummy (December 1959)
Starring Cushing. Another Hammer remake of a classic 1930s horror picture, and another good guy character for Cushing. This was not much of a stretch; his portrayal of the heroic lead was about two-thirds Van Helsing (of Dracula) and one-third Sherlock Holmes. It was a good, competent (if unsurprising) job, and audiences could hardly expect anything less from Cushing by now. Again, Christopher Lee portrayed the title monster.
