Joe's Story

When I was about 12-14 years old, I began to notice a light blue 1972 Mercury Montego GT sitting at a local garage from time to time, where it would be having it's oil changed or general maintenance done. I would also see it at the grocery store with a lady and two kids getting out of it. I thought it was the nicest car I had ever seen.

Strangely enough, when I turned 17 in 1979, I responded to a 'for sale' ad for a 1972 Montego GT, only to find out that it was the same car I had been drooling over all that time. I purchased the car with about 52,000 miles on it and drove it daily for 5 years. The car was equipped with a 351 CJ engine,C-6 automatic transmission and a 3.25:1 open rear axle. It had a blue interior with bucket seats and console. During the five years of ownership, I also purchased a light green '72 Montego GT equippd with a 302 2V and a white '73 Montego GT equipped with a 351 CJ. I was unable to keep either one of these two cars for very long, because they both needed some work and at this time in my life, I was very short of funds. I sold both cars and have no idea what happened to either one of them. When the blue car turned 95,000 miles I stopped driving the car regularly. I didn't want to drive it over the 100,000 mile mark. At this time in 1984, I decided to sell the car back to the original owner, Ray Ugron, who still owns the car today. Selling that car was the worst thing I ever did.

After six years of missing my first Montego GT, I purchased my fourth one in Jan.1990, a red '73 with a black vinyl top, 351 CJ, C6 Auto, and black bucket seats w/ console.

Since then I have bought five more, one of which I sold to a friend who lives nearby. I have also had four Montego GT parts cars, all of which were not restorable. I currently have five excellent examples of the '72/73 Mercury Montego GT. Since I was 17, I have owned a total of 13 '72/73 Montego GTs.
