What is Reiki?

The word "Reiki" is made up of two Japanese characters (Kanji):
• rei - universal
• ki* - life energy (also found in aikido)

So the term Reiki means "universal life energy."

*The character for "ki" is also found in Chinese, pronounced as "chi," as in "tai-chi" or "qi-gong."

During a reiki treatment, universal life energy flows through the practitioner's hands into the recipient's body.

Like the circulatory system for blood, the body has a kind of energy circulatory system. The energy pathways (the "veins" and "arteries" of this system) are specific points of the body known as meridians. Reiki provides a kind of "energy exfoliation," replacing the tense, injured, or ill energy, refueling the meridians with revitalizing energy. A healthy, balanced energy flow returns to the system.

During a Reiki treatment, the recipient lies on a bodywork table. The practitioner then places his or her hands on or above different areas of the recipient's body, allowing the reiki energy to flow through. The recipient may feel a deep heat or energy pulsations coming through the practitioner's hands.

Reiki treatments often result in:
  • a sense of deep relaxation
  • a centered/balanced feeling
  • a sense of well-being.

When one is under stress, the body takes its attention away from the digestive and immune systems, and puts it towards the adrenaline/"fight or flight" condition. Reiki re-balances the body, allowing its natural healing system and digestive system to function more  effectively. The effects of a reiki treatment continue well after the session is finished.
