Sleep With Me (94)

3/15/97

Stoltz and Tilly are a couple who've been shacking up with each other for a couple of years. Sheffer is his best friend and when the couple finally decide to take the plunge and get married, the best friend decides that the time is perfect for him to declare his love for Tilly also. It's a love triangle gone awry (is there any other kind). The actors are appealing, and Stoltz seems to inhabit his role as usual, but I really didn't give a shit whether or not the couple worked out. There was some artificial guy talk which seemed to take place mostly during poker games with other young men about love and such. I didn't buy it. There were two bright spots. I've heard all kinds of junk about how Parker Posey was going to take over the world with her charisma and wit. Well in a single scene at one of the poker games, she won me over with some of the smartest smart ass talk in movie history. She was joined by a co-hort, Joey Lauren Adams. They made me laugh, and I had to rewind a couple of times to hear all of their lines. The second bright spot was Quentin Tarantino who is in a single scene. One of the guys has finally hit the big time when his script is bought. Tarantino asks the writer what the story is about. In typical lispy, profane dialogue, he says 'Don't give me this shit about it being a biker movie or a fucking love story, I don't give a fuck about genres. I mean, what's it really about. Do you know what TOP GUN is about? It's about one man's struggle with his own homosexuality." In a hilarious discourse, Tarantino explains, with facts to back it up, why Tom Cruise was being courted by the gay side (Kilmer's Iceman) and the hetero side (McGillis). It was a little piece of originality surrounded by mediocrity.
