The Juror (96)
4/4/97
Alec Baldwin can be deviously evil. Remember MALICE: "I'm board certified in cardio-thorasic surgery. You ask me if I have a God complex. I AM GOD!" Yikes. In this one, Demi again plays a single mother, just trying to get by. A big Mafia case is going on in her upstate New York town and she appears to be the only one clueless enough to have not read a single article on the case. She's picked for the jury. Baldwin works for the mob. His job is to make sure that the mob guy gets off. He at first dates her, then scares the shit out of her. If he weren't so compelling, his character would be like hundreds of others. He can carry a scene on his intensity alone, and it's nearly believable when he gets more and more psycho. There's a plot device that includes Guatemala for no reason that I could see except the actors wanted to see the jungle. Extra special small performance by James Gandolfini as a compassionate (if this is possible) mob guy.
