Donnie Brasco (97)

3/8/97

Johnny Depp is strong enough to carry this picture. He finally found his mainstream project. Add to this Pacino, being much more subdued than usual, and you've got a winner. Much like GOODFELLAS, this is a 'learning-about-the-mob' film. Depp is an FBI agent who goes undercover to bust a crime family. What he doesn't count on is the deep affection he begins to feel towards the target of his sting. As we become more and more involved in the story, we begin to feel the same way. We must remind ourselves that Pacino is a killer, regardless of how nice he is to his family or how strong his connection is to those in the mob. Depp's family is not allowed to know what he does day-to-day and obviously being gone for months at a time is no way to have marital bliss. FORGETABOUTIT, this movie kicked ass.
