Daylight (96)
12/17/96
Sylvester Stallone is a limo driver. We meet him on a normal day in New York City. We also meet a rich old couple, a bus load of inmates, a frazzled woman, a family on vacation, a brash adventurer, and a transit cop. We know that eventually they'll all be trapped in the tunnel and relying on each other for help. You don't go to one of these movies to be challenged. A diamond heist getaway car collides with some unnamed toxic barrels and causes a fireball that burns up just about everyone in the tunnel, except the people we've met previously. Stallone is just outside the tunnel when the thing goes up in smoke and surprisingly we find out that he's not only a former EMS worker, but he actually knows the tunnel inside and out from doing a mock drill a couple of months back. What are the chances? This movie is filled with typical action sequences (stairs always collapse immediately behind our hero, never in front, the dog finds a way to hold its breath for several minutes and find all the humans). There's a scene involving four huge circulation fans, all with huge digital countdown timers, which must be jumped through in rapid succession. It's like the game Myst come to life. There are worse ways to spend 90 minutes
