Chungking Express (94)

5/3/97

A frenetic film which takes place in Honk Kong. Although I'm still not sure what the hell happened, it was a great ride. Slow-motion, Cranberries songs in Chinese, wacky characters. I think it was about love. There's a food stand called, ironically, 'chungking express', where two cops go to eat from time to time. They independently come across women who they fall in love with or fall out of love with. One talks to his soap bar, one eats 30 cans of pineapples, one woman wears a blonde wig, another dances to the Mamas and Papas while breaking in to apartments. It was great to watch. The characters were extremely attractive and idiosyncratic. I'm tired from watching. The videotape has an introduction and post-game by Mr. Tarantino. Once you get past his whiny voice, he actually has some interesting things to say about film.
