chadatru

General:
Chadatru - next to Urrem'tier, Chadatru is the most faceless of the gods. Lord of justice, he is the fairest of all the gods, holding a sword in his right hand and an olive laurel in his left. Chadatru is blind, but he fights as if he were gifted with sight. Fierce in a battle, Chadatru is the great arbitrator. He is the patron of kings, rulers, and judges. His word is his bond, and he tells the truth always. His emblem is the lion.

Rutilor - Rutilor is kind in his job as the defender of the gods. He judges with kindness and even-handedness, and is ferocious in what he defends. A patron of paladins, Rutilor will stalwartly defend anyone who he feels is getting a raw deal. A god of truth, he cannot lie. He is a collector of swords, especially extraordinary ones, and has enchanted a few in his time. He has a small kennel of hounds that he unleashes when someone has escaped his judgment; they cannot stop once they are on a trail, and they never lose their prey. Without fear, Rutilor is much the same way, and -- though short by comparison to other gods (it is the form he chose) -- has taken on opponents twice his size. His emblem is the mongoose.

Botolf - the god of dishonesty and deceit, Botolf is the symbol of corruptness and bribery. His actions have caused murderers to go free and thieves to get off with damages paid by the person who prosecuted them. Botolf loves to visit Dirge (his favorite city), and is the patron of Knife Clan and thieves guilds. Botolf is also the god of fallen paladins, and often appears in tarnished armor in need of a polish. His emblem is the goshawk.

Altars:
  • Siergelde Ruins
look rock -- Chadatru, patron of travelers and dictate of the seasons, is depicted in a faded chalk drawing upon these rocks. A ship appears to flounder in a violent sea, its mast split in two. Chadatru, shown as an old man with a flowing beard, holds his hands in an arch to indicate a safe harbor. Above him, snowflakes fall from a blazing sun while behind him, a gazelle nibbles calmly on a small shrub. Chadatru's right foot is firmly situated on a road, while his left foot rests upon a mountaintop.

  • Chadatru's Temple, Ratha 3rd Tier

  • Chadatru's Altar, Crossings Temple

  • Chadatru's Altar, Aesry Apartments Chapel
      [Ger Ilerthan, Chapel]
Rows of brightly polished pews bisected by a plush red carpet lead toward the altar where religious services are held for the residents. Covering the walls are rich tapestries, each of which depict one of the races of the Empire of the Seven-Starred Crown. On the far wall is a large stained glass window in colors of tawny gold and brown, so subtly interwoven that it only gradually reveals itself to be the image of a regal lion. You also see a large archway.

  • Chadatru, Theren Keep

      [Theren Keep, Chapel]
Sunlight is welcomed into the Chapel of Chadatru by the rainbow colors of a stained glass window set in the eastern wall. A richly embroidered tapestry serves as a backdrop to a polished ash altar carved with the image of a golden lion upon its surface. Simple oak benches have been placed here so the devout can come and observe the first rays of dawn blaze into existence across the face of the window, casting its fiery light across the altar of the god of justice. You also see a blue silk curtain, a marble archway, and a fragile-looking book on a small stand.

look altar - Lovingly polished, the ash altar glows with an inner fire. Carved upon its surface the scales of justice and crossed swords frame a magnificent lion.

Upon the first page is written in a faded script:

In the orders of creation upon the planets and planes of our existence,
In the domain of Truffenyi, still the Immortals have their laws and schemes,
Their forces of eternal creation and destruction,
Swinging in the balance, each yet has its say.
Upon the beam of life, praise the presence of Chadatru
The voice of infinite truth, that pervades the weakest mortal and highest king.

Those that seek to cloak truth to further their own small existence and purpose --
None can deceive the Blind One, the crucible of life.
No vision to deceive, Chadatru holds upon the point of his sword the terrible heart of fact,
To set forth upon the feasting table the barest, leanest, harshest, greatest dish.

You carefully turn the pages of the fragile book to read upon the second page:

Take it to thy nourishment, grow strong with that holy milk,
      Undiluted, unflavored:
Drink the bitter, drink the sweet, drink the draft of the undauntable --
Behold and embrace its fiercesome force --
The weak cannot abide it, only those of true power are capable to swallow it up,
      To face whatever Is.

The Blind One sees none but the grain's heart,
The heart's seed, the seed's germ, the germ's speck,
The speck's star, the star's fire, the fire's heat,
The heat's fuel, the fuel's faith.
The faith's knowing, the knowing known.

You carefully turn the pages of the fragile book to read upon the third page:

Thus my teacher spoke to me, the Voice of the Lion:

      Canto

      The face of Chadatru
Who beholds him, walks in his shadow,
      From the book of knowing
I sought to name the spirit,
Drew his name in the dust
Pled to pledge my sword arm to his fair sight,
Sought to know his mind and might.

You carefully turn the pages of the fragile book to read upon the fourth page:

Into the grim darkness I stared,
      Chanted his name,
Prayed to meld my thoughts to his --
The fearful be vigilent, for thy foe
As a roaring lion walketh about
Seeking whom he may devour --
We who hold faith steadfast, let the Lion
      Blindly hold our gaze
      For thou shalt not prevail
But it be the hand of truth --
      Bind thyself to his word-bond
That his victory be thy sooth.

You carefully turn the pages of the fragile book to read upon the last page:

For in the quiet laurels of his battle
Do thou justly, yet still _love_ mercy
And walk humbly before thy god --
Go to study this wisdom to thy knowing
      All else is naught but
      Embellishment and musing.

Upon concluding your reading, you carefully close the fragile book.

  • Rutilor's Alcove, Temple of Light, Shard
[Temple of Light, Alcove of Rutilor]
An effigy of a warrior in full plate lies upon a raised stone dais carved with the images of baying hounds. One wall is inscribed with the Paladin's Code, the other walls are adorned with rich tapestries illustrating legendary enchanted weaponry. Hard stone benches line the walls for repenting pilgrims. You also see an iron arch.
      Obvious exits: none.

The iron arch is pitted with age and the image of a crouching mongoose is etched across the top.

  • Rutilor, Theren Keep Basement
[Theren Keep, Basement] This end of the basement remains bare of supplies, excluding a dusty barrel tethered against the wall. A trail of footprints marches back and forth between a storeroom door and a sturdy ladder, but seems loath to proceed north any further than necessary. You also see a small stone altar and a plain wooden door.
      Obvious exits: north.

look altar - A pair of crossed swords over a rearing mongoose is carved deeply in the stone altar.

  • Botolf's Alcove, Temple of Darkness, Shard
      [Temple of Darkness, Botolf's Alcove]
The quality of light is dim and fuzzy here, as if some sort of thick miasma obfuscates your vision no matter which way you turn your gaze. A figure in shining armor stands at the back of the alcove, a mighty two-handed weapon clasped point-down against its chest.
      Obvious exits: south.

As you focus your eyes on the figure to look at it, it seems to come into focus more. What once appeared to be shining armor is now tarnished and dented, and the sword in its hands looks corroded.

On the armored figure you see a mighty two-handed sword.

  • Wyvern Mountain, Cavern
A painted triptych hangs on the wall of the cavern. The center panel depicts a golden-haired man wielding a gleaming greatsword, his only shield, an olive laurel. Fine linen covers his eyes, yet lack of sight seems no impediment as he battles his unseen foe. On his right is a painting of a group of kings, judges and wise men, while on his left hand, a tawny lion seems ready to step out of the panel and shake his shaggy mane. You also see a black arch and a white arch.
      Obvious exits: none.

look triptych -- Fair haired Chadatru fights as though sighted, the linen bandage covering his eyes and obscuring his features. Oddly, the bandage bears a remarkable resemblence to a towel.

      A black arch reads:
Botolf, keep me safe from detection and help me escape from the heavy hand of the law.
Your vision blurs as you pass through the arch, and you see...
A scruffy looking man in tarnished armor lounges against the wall of a seedy tavern. Upon his shoulder, a goshawk perches, its eyes darting about the area in a watchful manner. With a sidelong glance, you continue on your way.

      A white arch reads:
May Rutilor's wisdom and justice guide my dealings with others, keeping me honorable and true to myself.
Your vision blurs as you pass through the arch, and you see...
A rather short man in gleaming plate armor salutes you with a greatsword of silvery steel etched with golden roses as you pass through the arch. A pack of hounds mill about his feet, tugging at their leashes. A mongoose darts teasingly around the pack which, oddly enough ignores the playful animal.

a pitted iron Botolf etching (sold in Temple of Darkness in Shard) will have the same look as this column

You tap the Botolf column. - With exacting work, a battlefield scene has been carefully carved into the stone. A valiant band of armor-clad warriors fight what appears to be insurmountable odds in a battle against an overwhelming opponent. Teeth, claws, a mass of flesh, the enemy bears down upon the hopeless little band of courageous defenders who seem determined to fight to the last man. In the foreground a knight clad in battle armor looks fearfully back as he slinks away.

Crossings Cleric Guild Monk: A platemail-clad Paladin approaches the monk with a reverent bow. The monk smiles and says, "Chadatru protect you, my good man." and ushers him into the guildhall.

    [Therenborough Gardens, Blue Garden]

The initial impression here is one of flowerbeds lavishly planted with brilliant blue, but on closer examination the artful blending of mauve, purple and varying shades of blue can be seen. Midnight blue clematis climb through the cheerful blue globular blossoms of giant thistle, while pale mauve geranium and purple-leafed plantain cover the ground. A marble statue stands in the center, overlooking the floral display. You also see some white garden gates.
look statue - The marble form of Rutilor stands straight, with chin held high. His noble face has the look of wisdom and patience. A sheathed sword is worn at his side and several hounds sit at his feet.

    Memorial, Crossings Escape Tunnels

      [Crossing Escape Tunnels, Chadatru's Vigil]
Sudden flashes of light come from all directions, brilliant and momentarily blinding. Finally, though, one can see that these walls are hung with countless shields -- some near-perfect, others almost destroyed. Brass and gold, silver and copper are all set ablaze with the reflections cast by torches burning at each end of the room. On one wall, a small space is left almost clear, occupied only by a simple wooden plaque.
      Obvious exits: northeast, southwest.

      A simple wooden plaque reads:
"These shields hang in memory of the Paladins who fell defending Elanthia against the Gorbesh scourge. May Chadatru light their way for all eternity."
