We Found a Baby Possum!

One day not long ago, John was out in the back yard and found a small, very wet, shivering creature lying in the grass. At first we thought it was a mouse, but our neighbor Butch realized it was a baby opossum! It had evidently fallen off its mother's back and had been lying in the yard for at least 5-6 hours, during which our sprinkler had soaked it.

We called the wildlife rescue folks, who said we should keep her warm and and give her water to drink until we could take her in to them. We named her "O.P." (as in "O.P. Opossum"). Not counting her tail, she was about 4" long. We gave her a little cardboard box filled with paper towels and rags and put her on top of the toaster oven to keep warm. She was very docile, and seemed to enjoy snuggling on Campbell's chest. Would that grown-up possums would be so friendly!

And of course the dogs had to meet O.P. too -- here's Jenny getting up close and personal!

Unfortunately, O.P.'s back legs didn't seem to be working, but when we dropped her off at the Mercer County Wildlife Center they said they weren't broken and hoped things would work out for her. She went straight to their incubator and assuming all goes well, she'll be released back into the wild in a month or so.
