Here's a helpful error message generated by a staff listing application on an intranet:

Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers error '80004005'

[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Your transaction (process ID #50) was deadlocked with another process and has been chosen as the deadlock victim. Rerun your transaction.

The Hertz e-mail exchange

An email I sent to the fine folks at Hertz rental car company......

I was using your site to check pricing and availability of a rental car in Penticton, British Columbia. On the form I specified an airport/OAG code of YYF - this is the correct code for Penticton.

Your interface very rudely informed me there was an ERROR (it really had to be in all caps?) and that *I* had supplied an "invalid" airport code. Excuse me, but the code is completely valid. Just because *you* don't rent in Penticton doesn't make the code any less valid!

Don't you think it inappropriate to blame me (ie: your customer) for making an "error" because you aren't present in a particular location? Do you think that this sort of thing has anything to do with why consumers give such consistently low ease-of-use ratings to e-commerce sites?
