ERWIN, JAMES ROBERT
02/21/98
Ed Erwin
My ggrandfather James Robert ERWIN, b. 15Jan1853, in McDowell County, m. Nancy Cathey, died in Haywood Co. 1922.  His father was James ERWIN but we do not which James ERWIN.  James Erwin married twice and had children of both marriages.   He enlisted (verbal account of my ggrandfather) as older man in Civil War,  probably Homeguard Duty, and died during the Civil War.  His second marriage was before the War.   Children of first marriage were 1)James ERWIN(Jr?) unknown dates except that he visited the family in 1885 then entered a home for Confederate Vets in Raleigh abt 1900 and last letter was said to be abt 1905.  2) Capt. John ERWIN dates unknown, enlisted 7July 1862 in Mecklenburg Co, last led regiment 31Mar1865 at Chamberlain Run VA, came to Haywood Co. in 1867, went to Tenn 1883 and unknown since.  3)James Robert ERWIN b.15Jan1853 McDowell Co(my ggrandfather), mother died when he was infant, raised by step-mother, had half-sister that visited in 1885, youngster and unschooled during the Civil War, brought to Haywood Co. by older brother Captain John ERWIN in 1867 at age 14yrs.  When he obtained his marriage license,  he listed his mother as "Elizabeth" but we do not know if he listed his real or step-mother.   There are many James ERWINs that I have seen and have info on some of them and some are said to descend from Matthew ERWIN.  Several of these have been ruled out for one reason or another but I would appreciate any help.  I think this family was in Burke and then their location became McDowell in 1841 so the older brothers may hav been born in Burke.

My line continued through Joseph Parker Harvell(1849-1918}. He was raised by the family of William KENNERLY in Iredell Co. Not sure where his siblings were raised or by whom. WEST, GEORGE WASHINGTON

12/7/97 I am interested in obtaining information on the GEORGE WASHINGTON WEST family. GEORGE, his wife ELIZABETH (EVERHART), and children LAVADA RUEY, GEORGE DEWEY, ALFRED LEE, FLORENCE BELLE, and OTIS LAWRENCE moved to McDowell County in approximately 1914. While living there, four more children were born: ALONZO DALEY, VERDIE, WILLIE JAMES, and LOLA LOUISE. The family lived in several places, but one was located on Bucks Creek, off Route 10 between Marion and Asheville. Family history says that this place was about 100 yards off the road. Across the road (on the south side) was where the Blanton's lived and back to the east there was a family named Padgette. The daughter VERDIE died in the flu epidemic (approximately 1918-19) and was buried at Hick's Chapel. Daughter LAVADA RUEY married SAM MARTIN RENFRO on October 8, 1916 and remained in North Carolina when the family migrated to Indiana in 1929.
