IF ONCE YOU HAVE SLEPT ON AN ISLAND
©Rachel Field, 1926, from TAXIS AND TOADSTOOLS
If once you have slept on an island
You'll never be quite the same;
You may look as you looked the day before
And go by the same old name,
You may bustle about in street and shop;
You may sit at home and sew,
But you'll see blue water and wheeling gulls
Wherever your feet may go.
You may chat with the neighbors of this and that
And close to your fire keep,
But you'll hear ship whistle and lighthouse bell
And tides beat through your sleep.
Oh, you won't know why, and you can't say how
Such change upon you came,
But -- once you have slept on an island
You'll never be quite the same.

FEATURES OF OUR RENTAL COTTAGES
Cascio's Washington Island Cottages (formerly Young's Cottages) offers accomodations in 3 separate dwellings, the Norton Cottage, the Burgoon House, and the newly added Young House. The Norton and Burgoon are at the end of a long private driveway, and are right on the water; the Young House is very secluded and is also on the Bay. Amenities include full kitchens, fireplaces, and water view from many of the rooms. A telephone is available for emergencies (a calling card is needed for long distance calls). For your enjoyment, there are VCR/DVD players for your own movies, or you can rent them from a local shop. (Unfortunately there is no tv reception.) The Norton Cottage can sleep 4 people in 2 sleeping areas and has a full bath. The Burgoon House has 3 bedrooms on 2 stories, and will serve up to 6 people; it has 2 full baths, one on each floor. The Young House has 3 bedrooms, and an additional studio to accomodate large extended families or groups of friends. Please bring your own towels and bed linens.
NOTE: We are sorry but we do not allow pets in our rental units.
All of our rental units are NON-SMOKING.

ABOUT THE BURGOON HOUSE, NORTON COTTAGE, AND YOUNG HOUSE:
Dennis McDonald (Denny's bluff) purchased the property in 1855 before the cottage and house were built. It was sold to Harry Hagen in 1920, who sold it in 1939 to
Nan McAllister. She built a small place (semi-log) in the early 1940's. A cookhouse was built adjacent to the cottage, and later a screen porch was added to connect the 'summer kitchen' and cottage. The property was sold to Soren Miller in 1953; he built the other house, a 1 story, also semi-log. Both places were purchased by David and Janet Burgoon in 1967. The Burgoon house was passed to David Burgoon, Jr., who added a 2nd story to the house. His sister, Mary Ann Norton, owned the cottage. Their sister, Jean, and her husband, Doug Young, owned the property until 2003, when Mike Cascio purchased it. The Young House was added in 2007. Every effort has been made over the years to maintain and update the comfort of these homes without sacrificing the charm of the original dwellings.

ABOUT WASHINGTON ISLAND:
Washington Island, Wisconsin, lies approximately 6 miles off the northern tip of Wisconsin's Door County Peninsula. You'll arrive at the island via the Washington Island Car Ferry Line, which crosses Lake Michigan's Port des Morts (Death's Door) many times each day. Don't let the fearsome name, Death's Door, concern you - modern navigation and deluxe car ferries have made the 35 minute crossing an enjoyable and safe experience.
